From 1670 to 1814, it was Sikkim's second capital, but the Gurkha army destroyed it, leaving only the palace and chortens.
Rumtek, Sikkim's biggest monastery, was founded by Wangchuk Dorje, the 9th Karmapa Lama, in the 16th century. It resembles Tibet's Tsurphu monastery.
Forests and snow-capped mountains surround the town. Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims visit the town for its rich culture.
It's in good condition despite being 300 years old. The monastery is almost 6500 feet high and features a three-sided structure with statues of Padmasambhava.
The main thing to see at this temple is the 108-foot-tall figure of Lord Shiva, which can be seen from many kilometers away.
Chogyal Namgyal built the monastery in 1701. It is one of the oldest monasteries in the state and is 2,100 m above sea level.
The spot is 1,675 meters above sea level, so it has a great view of the Khangchendzonga range and the Rangit valley.
Phuntsog Namgyal, the first Chogyal king, was crowned at Norbugang in 1642. After the ceremony, Norbugang Chorten was built.
