Arshdeep Singh: Hidden Facts About Indian Cricketer!

Arshdeep Singh is an Indian International cricketer who has played for the national team in One Day International and Twenty20 game formats. A left-arm medium-fast bowler and left-handed batsman, Arshdeep represents the state of Punjab in domestic cricket.

In the Indian Premier League, he plays for the franchise Punjab Kings. Arshdeep holds the record of bowling a maiden over in his debut Twenty20 International (T20I) match and he is only the third Indian to achieve that feat. The cricketer has a massive fan following on social media with 7,85,000 followers on Instagram and 4,76,000 followers on Facebook.

Family

Arshdeep originally hails from a Sikh family in Guna, Madhya Pradesh. Later the cricketer’s family moved to Kharar near Chandigarh. Arshdeep’s father Darshan Singh worked as a Security officer with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for more than 25 years. The cricketer’s mother’s name is Baljit Kaur and he also has a brother, Akashdeep Singh who lives in Brampton, Canada.

Education

Arshdeep did his schooling at Guru Nanak Public School (GNPS) in Chandigarh and he studied during the period 2016-17. He also enrolled in cricket coaching at GNPS Cricket Academy. Later, when Arshdeep was selected for the Indian team, GNPS felicitated him with a cash reward of Rs 10,000 and a trophy.

Controversies

In September 2022, in the Super 4 Asia Cup match held between India and Pakistan, Arshdeep Singh dropped a simple catch in the crucial 18th over. At the end of the day, India lost the match and it finally resulted in severe cyber attacks against the cricketer.

The incident led to a furor on social media and it was displayed on Wikipedia that Arshdeep was selected to play for the ‘Khalistani national cricket team’. However, following the protests, Wikipedia later corrected the incorrect entry.

Eventually, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) summoned Wikipedia executives seeking an explanation on how the Wikipedia page of the cricketer was edited to reflect his association with Khalistan.

Profession

In his childhood days, Arshdeep used to play gully cricket with the boys in the neighborhood. With the turn of events, Arshdeep’s father Darshan used to observe his son bowling inswing at the practice sessions held in a park nearby to their Kharar residence. Thus, in 2015, Darshan made the teenager Arshdeep join coach Jaswant Rai’s cricket academy.

Soon after his joining, Arshdeep’s coach was quite impressed by his trainee’s ability to swing the ball. According to Jaswant, the two factors that worked in Arshdeep’s favor were his high-arm action and his height. Also, the youngster tried to bowl all six deliveries in an over differently.

In junior cricket, Arshdeep made his mark by playing in the Katoch Shield tournament. Later he got selected for the Indian under-19 team which went on to win the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Later the youngster also represented the under-23 national team.

In 2018, Arshdeep was picked for Punjab’s under-23 cricket team in the CK Nayudu Trophy. In the tournament, he displayed an excellent performance by taking eight wickets, including a hat trick. On 19 September 2018, the cricketer made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the following year, in January, the cricketer made his first-class debut against Vidarbha in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy. 

Arshdeep’s notable achievements in the IPL include emerging as Kings XI Punjab’s second-highest wicket-taker during the 2019 Indian Premier League.

On 25 November 2022, the cricketer made his ODI debut for India in a match against New Zealand. In the same year, on July 7th, Arshdeep made his T20I debut by playing against England. At the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup held in Australia, Arshdeep delivered a stellar performance by taking 10 wickets in six matches, clocking a bowling average of 15.60 runs per wicket. In the tournament, he went on to become the leading wicket-taker for India.

• Arshdeep had even thought of quitting cricket when he was sidelined by the Punjab Cricket Association during a U-19 tournament.

• As in the case of many other Punjabi youngsters, Arshdeep could have opted to go to Canada and lead a financially well-off life. However, in his case, Akashdeep Singh, Arshdeep’s brother who also used to play cricket decided to go to Canada so that Arshdeep could focus on cricket. After moving to Canada, Akashdeep studied there, did many odd jobs, and sent money to his family in India that later helped them become financially stable.

• In his early days, Arshdeep once reached late for the cricket camp which used to start at 5:30 am. When his coach Jaswant questioned the young lad about the reason for the delay, Arshdeep replied that he can punish him in whichever way he wanted. Later Jaswant got to know that the youngster’s cycle had broken and he walked all the way from his home in Kharar to reach the academy. Though the teenager could have told the truth to his coach, he chose not to do that. This incident made Jaswant realize that Arshdeep had the passion to play for India.

• Arshdeep’s mom says that he never tires and the only thing he asks her is to massage him post his training sessions. 

• Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram once praised Arshdeep’s bowling skills and told him that if he thinks that he is perfect, then he doesn’t have to come to him. On the other hand, if Arshdeep wanted to learn something from him, he could come whenever he wanted. The next day, Arshdeep went to Wasim and had a discussion.
