Darsheel Safary: The Child Star From Taare Zameen Par!

Darsheel Safary is an Indian actor who works in Hindi films, television, and theatre. He debuted as a child actor in the 2007 film ‘Taare Zameen Par’, directed by leading Bollywood actor Aamir Khan.

For his performance, Darsheel received critical acclaim and also won the Filmfare Critic’s Award for Best Actor. Later, he went on to act in films such as Bumm Bumm Bole, Zokkomon, and Midnight’s Children.

Darsheel Safary also appeared in television series such as Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Lage Raho Chachu, and Yeh Hai Aashiqui – Sun Yaar Try Maar.

Darsheel was born on 9th March 1997 to Mitesh Safary, a jeweler, and Sheetal Safary. The actor also has a sister Nejvi Safary.

In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, Darsheel once said that his relationship status is complicated in all senses. The actor also said that he is not seeing anyone. 

Education

Darsheel did his schooling at Greenlawn High School in Mumbai. Later, he joined H.R. College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Mass Media.

Controversies

Darsheel once opened up in an interview that he faced bullying in school after acting in 

Taare Zameen Par. According to the actor, when he was back to school, he was surrounded by his seniors. They pulled his tie, and Darsheel had to take a half-day to save himself. Darsheel said that even prior to acting in films, he was made fun of for his height and teeth. The actor says that his teeth were 1 km out.

When he was in school, Darsheel used to attend dance classes at Shiamak Davar’s dance school. During that time, scriptwriter and creative director Amol Gupte was looking for a child actor to play the protagonist in the film ‘Taare Zameen Par’. 

Thus in 2007, the 10-year-old Darsheel was cast for the role of Ishaan Nandkishore Awasthi, a dyslexic student in the Aamir Khan-directed movie. The film turned out to be a blockbuster and Darsheel received wide acclaim for his brilliant portrayal of the character.

Later, in 2010, Darsheel acted in ‘Bumm Bumm Bole’, a film directed by ace director Priyadarshan. It was followed by ‘Zokkomon’, Disney India’s superhero film in 2011, and Deepa Mehta’s ‘Midnight’s Children in 2012.

Darsheel appeared for the first time on television in 2011 with the serial ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’. He played the character of himself in the serial. The following year, Darsheel joined the dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5’ as a contestant.

Later, he went on to act in several other serials such as Lage Raho Chachu, Yeh Hai Aashiqui – Sun Yaar Try Maar, and Butterflies. The actor made his debut in Gujarati films with ‘Kutch Express’ where he appeared along with renowned actress Ratna Pathak Shah. 

When it comes to theatre, Darsheel has acted in plays such as ‘Can I help you’, ‘Two Adorable Losers’ and ‘Kaise Karenge’. In 2022, Darsheel acted in the web series ‘Aadha Ishq’ and played the role of Jazz. He has also been featured in the music video ‘Pyaar Naal’ by singer Vibhor Prashar.
