Ambareesh Murty: Unknown Facts About The CEO Of Pepperfry!

Ambareesh Murty was an Indian entrepreneur and angel investor. He is best known as the co-founder and CEO of Pepperfry, an online furniture and home decor store.
Prior to kickstarting his entrepreneurial journey, Ambareesh worked as a corporate professional with several top MNCs such as Cadbury, Britannia, Levi Strauss, and eBay. Later, in 2012, he co-founded Pepperfry along with Ashish Shah. Ambareesh breathed his last in Leh on August 7th, 2023, following a cardiac arrest.

Ambareesh Murty was on a road trip from Mumbai to Leh, a city in Ladakh. A few hours before his death, Ambareesh had posted an Instagram reel shot in Leh. In the video, he is seen praising the flat roads in the region, terming it as the ‘heaven for bikers’. Later, it was Ashish Shah, the co-founder and COO of Pepperfry who tweeted that Ambareesh passed away on 7th August at Leh, following a cardiac arrest.
Leh lies at an altitude of 3,524 meters or 11,562 feet. According to doctors, in regions with higher altitudes, a low amount of oxygen can act as a trigger for sudden cardiac arrest among those who have a pre-existing heart disease or underlying condition.

Ambareesh Murty Family
Ambareesh Murty’s father Late Vedantam Sriram Murty was a PhD in Economics. He was a former employee with the Finance department of Indian Airlines.
Ambareesh’s father had a love marriage with his mother, whose name is not available in public sources. The entrepreneur also has a sister Shambhavi Vedantam Murthy.

In June 1996, Ambareesh joined Cadbury India as an Area Sales Manager. Later, he was elevated to the role of Brand Manager. Ambareesh was the key person behind the launch of Cadbury ‘Temptations’ in 2001. After working for 5 years, Ambareesh quit the organization and joined ICICI Prudential AMC Ltd. as VP – Marketing & Customer Service.
In August 2003, he began his next stint in his career as a Brand Leader with Levi Strauss India Ltd. However, he worked with the organization only for 5 months and resigned from that job.
In December 2003, Ambareesh Murty founded ‘Origin Resources’, a startup that offered training content development for the Asset Management industry in India. However, after 1 year and 6 months of operations, the company was shut down in May 2005.
In June 2005, Ambareesh was back to the role of corporate professional. He joined Britannia Industries as Marketing Manager – Mass Markets. However, after a short stint of 7 months, he bid goodbye to the organization and joined eBay, the e-commerce behemoth as Director- Marketplace Development & User Experience. Later, he was promoted as Country Manager at eBay. After working for 5 years, Ambareesh resigned from his job in June 2011.
In July 2011, Ambareesh went on to co-found Pepperfry, an e-commerce startup selling furniture and home decor. In November 2021, General Electric, Mukesh Sharma Family Trust, and others pumped $10 million into Pepperfry. Back then, the company’s valuation stood at $460 million. At the time of his death, Ambareesh was working as the CEO of Pepperfry.
