Adah Sharma is an Indian film actress who majorly works in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil language movies. She kick-started her acting career with ‘1920’, the 2008 Hindi film directed by Vikram Bhatt.

Later, the actress earned a nomination for ‘The Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut’ for portraying the character of Lisa Singh Rathod in her debut movie.

Adah has a massive fan following on social media platforms with a whopping 14 million followers on Facebook and 7.2 million followers on Instagram.

Adah Sharma Family

Adah was born on 11 May 1992 in Mumbai in a Tamil Brahmin family. The actress’s father Late S. L. Sharma, hailed from Madurai in Tamil Nadu and worked as a captain with the Indian Merchant Navy. In January 2017, he passed away following a sudden heart attack.

Adah’s mother is a Brahmin from Palakkad and she is also an Indian classical dancer and mallakhamba yoga practitioner. Adah is the only daughter of her parents.

Relationship

In October 2022, Adah said that from her side, she is in a relationship. However, the actress was quick to add that she is not really sure about the feelings from the other person’s side.

Adah belonged to a family where everyone was well-educated. However, the actress stopped studying after her plus two as she wanted to venture into dance and movies full-time. Adah later completed her graduation in Kathak from the Natraj Gopi Krishna Kathak Dance Academy in Mumbai.

Controversies

Adah played the central character in ‘The Kerala Story’, the controversial Hindi movie directed by Sudipto expected to be released in May 2023. The theme of movie revolves around a group of women from the state of Kerala being converted to Islam and made to join the extremist outfit, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Many political parties have been demanding a ban on the movie due to its controversial subject.

In the wake of the controversy, Adah, on May 1st tweeted that several senior persons in high designations had commented on the movie after watching its 2-minute trailer. She added that her parents have always asked her to respect her elders.

With due respect to all the elderly people, the actress pleaded with all of them to take 2 hours out of their busy schedule and watch ‘The Kerala Story’. Adah asserted that on watching the movie, they will certainly realize that in the movie, the makers haven’t shown Kerala in any derogatory light. The actress’s tweet ends with ‘Jai Hind’ followed by the emoji of the Indian flag.

At the young age of 16, Adah made her debut with the Hindi movie ‘1920’. The film turned out to be a success at the box office and Adah received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Lisa Singh Rathod, a possessed woman. 

Following that, she acted in Hasee Toh Phasee, a film directed by Vinil Mathew and produced by Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap. However, her next two Hindi movies, Phhir- a horror film, and the romantic comedy Hum Hai Raahi Car Ke failed to make any impact at the box office.

Later, Adah went on to act in Telugu movies such as Heart Attack, S/O Satyamurthy, Garam, and Kshanam. The actress’s other major Hindi movie was Commando 2, where she was cast opposite action hero Vidyut Jammwal.

Apart from movies, Adah has acted in web series such as Pukaar, The Holiday, Pati Patni Aur Panga, etc. The actress has also been part of short films such as Tindey, Moh, and Soulsathi. She has also appeared in many music videos such as Life, Tu Yaad Aya, Drunk N High, etc.

Lesser Known Facts About Adah Sharma

  • At the early age of 3, Adah started doing yoga. The actress’s mother used to sit in Padmasana, chant Om, and used to perform exercises such as handstands. Back then, little Adah used to imitate her mother’s asanas. According to the actress, as a kid, the most difficult part for her was doing Shavasana, as remaining still in one place proved to be very hard.
  • When she was in class X, Adah wanted to stop studying. However, upon her parents’ insistence, the actress completed her Plus two and later graduated in Kathak.
  • In the initial days of her acting career, Adah was rejected in many auditions for Bollywood films. The reasons cited for her rejection were that she had curly hair and she looked too young to become a female lead. 
  • In 2020, Adah made a controversial statement about the casting couch in the film industry. According to the actress, the casting couch is a reality that is not limited to the Hindi film industry or the South, but it exists in all film industries. Adah went on to say that it is up to you whether you want to sit, stand or sleep on the couch.
  • Adah visits her maternal home Palakkad, twice a year. In 2015, the actress went to Kochi for the audio launch of the Malayalam version of a Telugu film of hers starring Allu Arjun. Later, the actress said that she felt strange visiting the state alone as she is used to visiting Kerala with her family members.
  • In an interview, Adah was asked about why she was focussing more on South Indian movies. According to the actress, she doesn’t have any godfather or connections in Bollywood, and unlike other fields, one cannot be assured of the results even if they work hard in movies.
