Anurag Basu is an Indian director, producer, screenwriter, and actor who works primarily in Hindi films. He started his career as an assistant director for the television serial ‘Tara’ in 1994.
Eventually, Anurag Basu became the independent director of ‘Tara’ and went on to direct several other serials such as Koshish Ek Aasha and Miit. Later, he made his debut as a film director with the 2003 Hindi film ‘Saaya’.
A recipient of several coveted awards such as the IIFA Awards and Filmfare Awards, Anurag has also written screenplays for films such as ‘Life in a Metro’.

Anurag Basu Family
Anurag was born in a middle-class Bengali family in Bhilai. The director’s father, the late Subrato Bose was an employee with SAIL Bhilai Steel Plant in Cokeovens and his mother Deepshikha Bose worked with the Education department.
Anurag’s both parents were amateur theatre artists and thus he spent his childhood days in theatre.
Relationships
Anurag met his wife Tani while working on a documentary film in Guwahati, Assam. Tani was his boss and it was during a dinner at a restaurant that he first spoke to her.
Eventually, the couple fell in love with each other. Though, their parents had objections, Anurag and Tani finally got married. The couple is having two daughters, Ishana and Ahana.
Education
Anurag did his schooling at BSP Senior Secondary School in Bhilai. Even though he got admission to Jabalpur engineering college later, Anurag did not join and came to Mumbai to pursue a career in the film industry.
Though he wanted to join FTII, Pune for learning cinematography, it was mandatory to learn physics. Thus he enrolled for B.Sc Physics at Mumbai University and completed his graduation.
Controversies
Anurag was one of the three judges in ‘Super Dancer 3’, a television reality show. In one of the episodes aired during 2018-19, the judges asked an inappropriate question to one of the child contestants about his parents. The clip of the video soon went viral on the internet. Later, the National Commission for Protection of Child RighRights (NCPCR) issued a notice to the makers of the show. While commenting on the controversy, Anurag said that he will not defend what happened. The director also added that being a father of two kids, he understands how embarrassing the issue would have been to the parents.

During his second year of college, Anurag was cast as a background dancer for the Prakash Mehra-directed film ‘Dalal’. Later, in 1994, he got an opportunity to assist Director Raman Kumar who was making the television serial ‘Tara’. Anurag was lucky and within a few months, he became the independent director of the serial. It was followed by several television serials such as Koshish Ek Aasha and Miit.
In 2003, Anurag got the opportunity to direct his first Hindi film ‘Saaya’ produced by renowned filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. In the same year, he directed one more movie ‘Kucch To Hai’. The following year, Anurag turned scriptwriter and director for the Mahesh Bhatt- produced film ‘Murder’.
Later, he donned multiple roles of director, writer, and scriptwriter for several films such as Gangster, Life in a Metro, Barfi, Jagga Jasoos, and Ludo. The upcoming film directed by Anurag is ‘ ‘Aashiqui 3’ with Kartik Aaryan in the lead role. Anurag has his own production company ‘Anurag Basu Productions’. He turned producer with the films ‘Ludo’ and the upcoming film ‘Metro In Dino’.
