History and Architecture of Chapora Fort

As mentioned Chapora is one of the oldest forts in North Goa built in the 17th century. It was used to protect the territory from the Maratha Empire (Marathas) as it provides few from the sea and is a perfect point to plan strategic moves depending on the enemy movement in the area. Yet in 1739 the fort was captured by the Marathas and abandoned in the 19th century.

The current structure is an incomplete one due to the ruins over the decades. It has two main gates in which one of which faces the land side and the other facing the sea. Built with a blend of Portuguese and Indian culture and architecture with the use of red laterite stone the interior was divided into multiple sections with a small chapel inside dedicated to St, Anthony.

The place offers several activities to its visitors and here are the notable ones to take part in.

Water Sports:

Due to the fact that it is located near several beaches including Anjuna, Vagator, and Morjim, it offers fun activities like parasailing, jet skiing, and boat rides.
