The trailer of Shaitan, a crime drama web series directed by Mahi was released on June 5th, 2023. It stirred controversy as a section of the audience termed its content vulgar and violent. However, Mahi soon came out in defense of the movie. 

In an interview, Mahi V Raghav said that he wanted to clarify one thing. According to the director, he respects everyone’s opinion and at the same time, he has displayed a disclaimer mentioning that the film contains coarse language and violence and it was made only for a specific category of the audience.

As a director, Mahi takes artistic license to convey that his characters and dialogues are researching crime. reflect the setting of the story and stay true to its universe. The director added that otherwise, it will be like doing an injustice to the narrative.

Mahi concluded by stating that Shaitan is not a vulgar movie, but it is set in a crime world. Since the poster and trailer of the film clearly show what it is all about, the audience has a clear choice of whether to watch the movie or not.

Since his childhood days, Mahi was an avid movie lover. After completing his studies, Mahi worked in the retail management industry for a decade in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. 

Later Mahi returned to India and in 2008 he forayed into films by assisting Sai Kiran Adivi in the film Vinayakudu. In the same year, he went on to set up ‘Moonwater Pictures’, a film production company along with Rakesh Mahankali and Pavan Kumar Reddy.

The first movie produced by the company was Villagelo Vinayakudu and it was followed by Kudirithe Kappu Coffee and Paathshala. All three films turned out to be massive hits and they also received wide critical acclaim.

In 2014, Mahi became a screenwriter and director with Pathasala, a film produced by Moonwater Pictures. It was followed by Anando Brahma in 2017 and Yatrain in 2019 where he donned the dual roles of writer and director.

Of these, Anando Brahma was a comedy horror film with Taapsee Pannu, Vennela Kishore, and Shakalaka Shankar in the lead roles. It turned out to be a super hit and was remade as Petromax in Tamil and Mane Maratakkide in Kannada.

In 2019, Mahi announced the launch of his new production company – Three Autumn Leaves. The first film from the company was Yatra, a movie made based on the life story of the Late Chief Minister Mr.Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The other movies from the director lined up for release include Sidda Lokam Ela Undhi Nayna where actress Shraddha Srinath will be playing the female lead and Yatra 2, a sequel to Yatra which will be based on the story of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the current Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

In 2023, Mahi also forayed into OTT platforms by directing Save The Tigers, a Telugu comedy series, and Shaitan, a crime drama web series. 

Some major achievements in Mahi’s career include his film Pathasala being nominated for the best direction at the 1st IIFA Utsavam and Anando Brahma receiving a nomination for the best debut director at the 7th South Indian International Movie Awards.

• When he started working on ‘Yatra’, Mahi could not imagine anyone else other than Mammooty in the lead role of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. According to the director, Mammooty treats every film like his first one and it was Mammooty who suggested dubbing the Telugu film to Tamil and Malayalam.

• Mahi strongly believes that an honest biopic can never be made. 

• Mahi says that he never liked actress Taapsee Pannu’s work in South Indian films and he even admitted that to her. However, after he narrated the story of the film Anando Brahma to her, Mahi had an intuition that she would be the right fit for the role.

• According to Mahi, cinema was an escapism for him to get away from the real world. Years later, he discovered that it was nothing but lucid dreaming, and storytelling was an extension of lucid dreaming.
