Puneet Bisht is an Indian cricketer who played for the states of Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya in domestic cricket. A wicketkeeper-batsman, Puneet was also part of the Delhi Daredevils franchise in the 2012 Indian Premier League.

Some of the significant achievements of the cricketer include emerging as the top run-scorer for Meghalaya in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy and scoring a triple century for Meghalaya against Sikkim in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy.

After playing 17 years of competitive cricket, Punnet announced his retirement from the game on 2nd August 2023.

Profession

A wicketkeeper and a right-handed batsman, Puneet started his domestic career in 2006 by playing for the state of Delhi. In the 2007-08 season, Delhi went on to win the Ranji trophy and Puneet was a member of that team.

Later, in 2011, in a match held at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground in Delhi, the cricketer scored an unbeaten 223 for Delhi against Baroda. Puneet faced 290 balls and his innings consisted of 30 fours and 2 sixes. Of these, one sixer was against Irfan Pathan, the Indian international cricketer.

In 2012, Puneet made his entry into the Indian Premier League as he was picked by the franchise Delhi Daredevils.

After his long stint with Delhi in domestic cricket, Puneet later became a member of the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team. In November 2017, in the Ranji trophy match held between J&K and Jharkhand, the cricketer scored a sparkling 115 for his side.

In 2018, Puneet joined the state of Meghalaya in domestic cricket. At the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he went on to become the leading run-scorer for Meghalaya by scoring a mammoth 502 runs in just 8 matches. Later, at the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, in the match held between Meghalaya and Sikkim in December 2018, Puneet scored his maiden triple century in first-class cricket.

The brilliant knock by the cricketer still remains the highest first-class score by a wicketkeeper. In the tournament, Puneet also emerged as the leading run-scorer for Meghalaya with a massive 892 runs from just 8 matches.

Puneet Bisht holds the record for scoring the maximum number of sixes in T-20 cricket by an Indian player. It was at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament held in January 2021 that the cricketer scored an unbeaten 146 in just 51 balls that included 17 sixes and 6 boundaries. Puneet’s knock of 146 also bagged the record of the second-highest score in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, only behind Shreyas Iyer’s 147.

In his career, Puneet has also played for Garstang cricket club in the United Kingdom.

The cricketer is quite passionate about coaching and has already completed the BCCI-NCA Level II coaching course. Currently, he is preparing for his Level III exam.

On 2nd August 2023, Puneet announced his decision to hang up his boots. In his 17-year career, the cricketer played a total of 103 First-Class games. He scored 5231 runs with an average of over 38 which also includes 10 centuries. The cricketer also took 299 catches and did 19 stumpings.

When it comes to List-A matches, Puneet played a total of 103 games. It consists of 2924 runs with six hundreds and 17 fifties and his average comes close to 39.

  • According to Puneet, the most memorable moment in his career was winning the Ranji Trophy for Delhi.
