Rakhigarhi Explore The Largest Harappan City!

If you are someone passionate about the archaeological specialities and other heritage values of the Indian territory, Rakhigarhi becomes a place you must visit. Even though commonly written as Rakhigarhi, in some places, you can also see the same place mentioned as Rakhi Garhi.

Rakhigarhi is located in the state of Haryana on the northern side of the Indian mainland. This location belongs to the Indus Valley Civilization and you would be able to learn a lot about the same by visiting this place in the state.

According to the studies conducted to date, many of the largest settlements belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization belong to this location making this a place quite worthwhile to visit. If you are quite aware of history, you might have heard about the phases of the same civilization. Among those phases, this location in the state of Haryana belongs to the mature phase, again accentuating its significance in a historical tourist visit.

Unfinished Excavations Unveiling The Indus Valley Secrets

Even though this place is an archaeological hotspot, excavations are not yet complete in most of the locations here. It was during the 1960s that the government and its archaeological authorities began excavating this place to understand and record more about the Indus Valley Civilization that happened here.

After the first phase of excavations, the 1990s saw the next phase. The third round of excavations happened during the period between 2012 – 2016. Again in 2021, another round of excavations began which is still going on in the location.

However, records show that the intensity and seriousness of excavations increased recently which helped in enhancing the tourism significance of this place among history and heritage enthusiasts.

This particular city is spread over an area of 5.5 square kilometres. Some of the neighbouring regions of Rakhi Garhi have also got similar archaeological significance such as Mitathal and Lohari Ragho. Even though these regions are quite worthy of excavations, officials have not begun with the same in those locations.

Location

You need to travel to the northern side of the Indian mainland to find this archaeologically significant location called Rakhi Garhi. Haryana is the Indian state to which this particular place belongs.

From the state, you can find this place in the district called Hisar. If you are travelling from the national capital of New Delhi, you may need to travel a distance of around 150 km in the northwestern direction to reach the destination. Ghaggar River Plain is the geographical location of the place if you are curious to know more than the territorial location.

There is a distance of around 27 km from the seasonal side of the Ghaggar River to reach the Rakhigarhi. Rakhi Garhi is a rural area and you would also be able to see the native lifestyle and culture of people living there currently, apart from the archaeological side.

Climatic Conditions

Humdity is the major concern in the climate of Rakhigarhi. During the summers and monsoons, the humidity levels in the atmosphere are seen comparatively higher making the weather a bit uncomfortable at least for some.

Early summer months and late winter months are when these humidity levels are seen less. During this season, precipitation would also be lesser in the region.
