However, when Shivam was 14, he had to stop playing cricket for almost five years due to a lack of fitness. The reason was that his family was going through financial constraints and thus the teenager could not concentrate on his fitness.

Later it was Shivam’s father who brought his 19-year-old son back to cricket. He even made a small pitch near their house so that the youngster can focus on practice. Thus, Shivam again started playing cricket at the U-19 level. Due to the long 5-year gap in cricket, the Mumbai lad could never play junior cricket.

In club cricket, the teenager played for Karnataka sporting club and earned a reputation.  Eventually, the Mitsui Shoji T20 League in Mumbai proved to be the launchpad for Shivam. The cricketer’s brilliant performance for Ghatkopar Jets and Thane Marathas helped him get a berth in Mumbai’s U-23 side.

On 18 January 2016, Shivam played his debut Twenty20 match for Mumbai at the 2015–16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The following year, the cricketer made his List A debut for Mumbai in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Later, in the 2018 Ranji trophy, the youngster emerged to be the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai. Shivam also hit five sixes in a Ranji trophy match held in December 2018.

In December 2018, Shivam was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whooping Rs.5 crore for the 2019 Indian Premier League. However, he could score only 40 runs in 4 innings in that season. Two years later, the cricketer was bought by Rajasthan Royals for the 2021 IPL and Chennai Super Kings for the 2022 season.

In the international arena, Shivam played his debut T20I match for India against Bangladesh, on 3 November 2019. The following month the cricketer played his first ODI match for India, against the West Indies.

On 2 February 2020, in the fifth T20I match against New Zealand Shivam put forth a dismal performance and conceded 34 runs in a single over. It turned out to be the second-most expensive over in a T20I match.
