Somy Ali is a Pakistani-American actress, filmmaker, and activist. She has acted in several Bollywood films of the 90s such as Krishan Avtaar, Anth, and Yaar Gaddar.

Somy has also made many short films on abortion, domestic violence, and teenage suicide. She is the founder of ‘No More Tears’, a non-profit organization working with the mission of rescuing victims of human trafficking and domestic violence.

Somy has been a recipient of many prestigious awards such as the American Heritage Award from the American Immigration Council and The Daily Point of Light Award by President George H. W. Bush in 2015.

Somy Ali Family

Somy Ali was born on March 25, 1976, to Madan, a Pakistani, and Tehmina, an Iraqi. The actress also has a younger brother, Mohammed.

Though Somy was born in Karachi, at the age of 9, the actress moved to South Florida in the United States with her mother and brother.

Relationships

After watching the superhit Bollywood movie ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’, Somy was attracted to its hero Salman Khan. Soon she traveled to India to marry the actor. When she was 17 years, Somi started dating Salman, and their relationship lasted from 1991 to 1999.

Later the actor couple had a breakup and Somy went back to America. In an interview, Somy later revealed that if one is not happy in a relationship, it is better to part ways and the same happened in her’s and Salman’s relationship.

Education

Somy did her schooling at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Karachi. Later, the actress attended Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, and completed her major in psychology. Though she joined the University of Miami to obtain a master’s degree in broadcast journalism, Somy dropped out of the course.

Later, the actress enrolled at the New York Film Academy and graduated in filmmaking, direction, screenwriting, and editing. Somy also holds a certification in broadcast journalism from the Connecticut School of Broadcasting.

Controversies

In her Instagram post, Somy once opened up about the harassment she had to face from Salman Khan, her ex-boyfriend. According to the actress, despite having several other affairs and flings, Salman used to belittle her constantly by calling her ugly, stupid, and dumb.

Some went on to say that though he did not acknowledge her as a girlfriend in public for years, finally when he did the actor used to humiliate her in front of his friends and berate her continuously.

In 1993, Somy made her debut in Bollywood with ‘Krishan Avtaar’, a film directed by Ashok Gaikwad. It was followed by Anth, Yaar Gaddar, Teesra Kaun, and Aao Pyaar Karen in the same year. Later, Somi became part of several other films such as Andolan, Mafia, and Chupp. In 2002, she also appeared in ‘Fight or Flight – Season 1’, which aired on Amazon Prime.

Somy later became involved with women’s rights issues in South Asia. The actress has also written articles about rape victims such as Sonia Naz, Shazia Khalid, and Mukhtaran Mai.

Since August 2007, Somy is also the CEO of So-Me Designs, LLC, a clothing line business. The profits from this concern are donated to ‘No More Tears’, the non-profit organization founded by her in 2007.

Somy’s father was immensely rich and they used to live in a 28-bedroom mansion.

While speaking about her stint in acting, Somy rated herself as a ‘pathetic actor’ and the ‘worst dancer’. According to the actress, she is shocked at how she acted in 10 films.

The actress gives zero value to materialism and says that she is not attracted to shiny objects like diamonds.

Somy once revealed that a couple of directors tried to have sex with her. She also mentioned her abusive relationship with Salman and termed her overall experience in Bollywood as pretty bad.
