Frances Antony Cyril Raja, popularly known as Vijay Antony is an Indian music composer, actor, playback singer, editor, and director who works primarily in the Tamil film industry. He started his career as an assistant to a sound engineer and debuted as a music director with the 2005 movie ‘Sukran’.

In 2012, Vijay played the lead role in ‘Naan’, a film directed by debutant director Jeeva Shankar. He also holds the record of being the first Indian to win the 2009 Cannes Golden Lion for the “Nakka Mukka” commercial in the Best Music category.

Vijay Antony Family

Born on 24 July 1975, Vijay is the great-grandson of Samuel Vedanayagam Pillai, a renowned Tamil author.  The actor lost his father when he was 7 years old. Due to financial difficulties, Vijay’s mother took up a government job to support their family. The actor also has a sister.

On hearing the music of Vijay’s film ‘Sukran’, Fatima, a popular anchor with Sun TV back then called him. She appreciated his music and the conversation between the two went on for an hour. Fatima also invited Vijay to her home. With the turn of events, Fatima also used to visit his house and speak with his mother. Gradually, their friendship blossomed into love and the music director proposed to Fatima. Finally, in 2006, they both tied the knot.

The couple had two daughters, Meera and Lara. Meera, a 12th-standard student at a private school in Chennai committed suicide in the wee hours of the morning on September 19th, 2023. Reportedly, she was suffering from stress and took an extreme step.

Vijay did his schooling in Tamil medium schools. Subsequently, the actor completed his graduation in Physics from St. Xavier’s College in Trichy. Later, Vijay enrolled in a course in visual communication at Loyola College.

On September 10th, 2023, music director Ar Rahman’s music concert in Chennai ended up in a stampede as the organizers of the event oversold the tickets. Following the incident, ‘Mars Tamil Nadu’, a YouTube channel came up with a video alleging that Vijay Antony played a role in the concert going haywire. Soon, Vijay clarified that those rumors were completely false and he would be filing a defamation case against the channel for damages.

Vijay entered the music industry as an assistant to a sound engineer. Later, the youngster composed the title tracks of much popular television series such as ‘Kana Kaanum Kaalangal’ and ‘Kadhalika Neramillai’.

In 2005, Vijay debuted as a music director with ‘Sukran’, a film directed by S.A. Chandrasekhar. Later, he went on to compose music for several films such as Dishyum, Iruvar Mattum, Naan Avanillai, Ninaithale, and Kadhalil Vizhunthen. Of these “Naaka Mukka” songs of Kadhalil Vizhunthen fetched Vijay the Cannes Golden Lion Award.

In 2012, Vijay played the lead role in the film ‘Naan’. It was followed by roles in films such as Salim, India Pakistan, Pichaikkaran, Kaali and Pichaikkaran 2. Vijay also turned director with the film ‘Pichaikkaran 2’.

As a playback singer, Vijay has delivered several songs such as “Saathikadi”, “Dailamo”, “Ichu Ichu”, “Thangama Vairama” and “Slum Anthem”. He has also been the editor of films such as Annadurai, Thimiru Pudichavan, Kodiyil Oruvan, and Pichaikkaran 2.

  • Vijay admits that he is not a good actor. However, he was quick to add that he selects good stories. The actor says that good looks are not important and a good story will make an actor look good. 
  • As in the case of his daughter, Vijay’s father also committed suicide. During that time, the actor’s sister was just five years old. Vijay says that he feels sad whenever he hears about suicide.
  • Vijay once revealed that money is not important to him. The actor went on to say that he struggled a lot during his childhood days and he achieved everything from acting.
  • For the shooting of the film ‘Yaman’, Vijay was asked to bing-eat a lot to put on weight. During those days, the actor used to go to the gym and followed a strict diet regime.
