Yuvaraj Dhayalan is an Indian cinema director and scriptwriter who works in the Tamil film industry. He started his career as an assistant director to M. Raja for the film ‘Santosh Subramaniam’. In 2011, he became an independent director with ‘Potta Potti’, a cricket comedy movie with Sadagophan Ramesh in the lead role.

Later Yuvaraj went on to direct films such as ‘Tenaliraman’ in 2014 and ‘Eli’ in 2015. The upcoming film from the director is ‘Irugapatru’, a social impact movie with Vikram Prabhu, and Shraddha Srinath in the lead roles.

Yuvaraj once revealed in an interview that he had fallen for a girl during his school days. Later, after his school days, one of his friends played a prank on the director by saying that his love interest had joined Loyola College in Chennai. In order to study in the same college as that girl, Yuvaraj also joined Loyola. However, the youngster later came to know that Loyola wasn’t a co-ed college and got angry at his friend for fooling him.

On 26 September 2023, while speaking at the pre-release event of his upcoming movie ‘Irugapatru’, an emotional Yuvaraj spoke about the bitter experience he had gone through in the past. ‘Eli’, the film directed by him in 2015 failed miserably at the box office. According to Yuvaraj, after the release of that film, he faced a lot of humiliation.

Finally, the young director decided to run away from the industry as he did not want to be humiliated anymore. However, it was producer Thangaprabhakar who asked him to forget whatever happened and offered to discuss any story ideas.

Yujaraja’s next project as an assistant director was the 2010 film ‘Irumbukkottai Murattu Singam’, a cowboy movie directed by Chimbu Deven.

At the age of 22, Yuvaraj became an independent director with the film “Potta Potti”. Back then, he was the youngest director in the industry. A story written by Yuvaraj himself, ‘Potta Potti’ opened up to positive reviews from critics. After that film, there was a gap of one and a half years as the debutante director did not know what to do next.

The next film from Yuvaraj was ‘Tenaliraman’, a historical comedy movie with Vadivelu and Meenakshi Dixit in the lead roles. Released in 2014, the film turned out to be a hit and collected 22.9 million at the box office worldwide.

In 2015, Yuvaraj wrote and directed ‘Eli’, his next movie with actor Vadivelu. However, the film bombed at the box office and received negative reviews from critics.

After a long 8-year break, Yuvaraj is coming up with his next film ‘Irugapatru’ in 2023. A romantic drama, the director has cast Vikram Prabhu, and Shraddha Srinath in the movie. The teaser of ‘Irugapatru’ is already out and the film is all set to release in theatres on 6th October.

• When Yuvaraj entered the film industry, he wanted to do serious films such as Anbe Sivam and Agni Natchathiram. However, he went on to direct comedy movies and the director says that even now he doesn’t know how it happened. For making comedy films, Yuvaraj used to watch lots of films in which comedian Crazy Mohan acted.
