Erode Explore The Textile Hub In Tamil Nadu!

Erode is a city that lies on the north side of the state of Tamil Nadu and is a well-known market center. The city is located on the banks of the rivers Bhavani and Cauvery. Further, this is a landlocked region having no sea cost of its own.  The district is bounded to the north by Karnataka and the river Kaveri to the east.

Further, to the south lies Coimbatore, and to the Nilgiris in the west. Erode is also an important business center of turmeric as there is a massive production. It also has medicinal value as there is high curcumin content. For tourists, this place is a weekend gateway as there are temples, forts, sanctuaries, viewpoints, tiger reserves, museums, and more to explore.聽聽

Best places to visit in Erode 

Vellode Birds Sanctuary

The Vellode bird sanctuary is situated around 15 km from Erode, Tamil Nadu. It is established in the year 1996 and is considered to be a paradise for bird lovers. The sanctuary is about 200 acres and is just 10km away from the Erode Junction railway station. The sanctuary has many species of birds including the ones that come from other countries. Further, some common bird species that ply are teals, pintail ducks, pelicans, cormorants, and darters. 

It is fact that this bird sanctuary has a history of being just a water storage tank with no forest cover. However, with the passage of time, it became a paradise for birds and now trees and food are abundant for the birds. As such it is the ideal location for enjoying nature’s beautiful birds along with the scenic views.

Vellode Birds Sanctuary

Karadiyur View Point

The Karadiyur viewpoint is located to the northeast near Yercaud in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu. It is known for its natural beauty and offers a scenic view of the Mettur dam. Nature along with hills and valleys gives the feel of standing in a gorgeous place like heaven. Further, there were numerous sloth bears in the area and hence the name Kaeadiyur.

Tourists can view sunrise and sunset from this place and have a memorable experience.  Moreover, visitors can have the feeling of adventure during the climb to the top. After the effort, the stunning serene beauty and the lush green cover will never disappoint nature lovers.

Bhavanisagar Dam

Bhavani Sagar dam is situated in Erode, Tamil Nadu. It is built on the Bhavani River and is one of the biggest earthen dams in India. Further, this dam was built in 1956 and receives water from the Bhavani River and Moir River.  It is used to store water for irrigation, electricity, and drinking purposes. For Tourists, this is a place where there is an abundance of greenery, a garden, and areas for younger ones to have fun.

Periya Mariamman Temple

The Periyamariamman Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Goddess Mariamman. It is situated in Erode and is anticipated to be constructed by Cholas in the 10th century. The temple has a history of being damaged by the Mysore rulers in the 18th century and later repaired by the British in the 19th century. Further, the architecture style is Draviaidan and has a six tired tower and courtyard.

There are big sculptures of Hindu gods Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma. The popular festival that unites Hindu Pilgrims is the Mariamman festival. Moreover, Hindu mythology states that Goddess Mariamman has abilities to cure illness and is worshipped by all irrespective of religion, caste, or class.

Periya Mariamman Temple

Arudra Kabaliswarar Temple

Arudra Kabaliswarar Temple is popular for its rich heritage and is situated in Erode, Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the specialty is that there are 108 shivalingas carved to the main deity. Further, the temple is known for getting one鈥檚 wishes fulfilled. The sun’s rays fall on the face of the deity and people find this auspicious.

Moreover, Lord Kabaliswarar is known to give peace and prosperity throughout the city. The temple is around 1000 years old and holds the title of the first temple in the region of Tamil Nadu. Further, there are festivals on the occasion of Maha Shivrathri. 

Arudra Kabaliswarar Temple

Government Museum, Erode

The Government Museum, Erode is located on the VOC park campus and opened to the public in the year 1987. The museum has a rich repository of art, anthropology, and archaeology. It has an overall area of 1200 sq. feet and has stunning collections. Further, the exhibits include Kongu Chola inscriptions, Kongu Chola sculptures, various Manuscripts, and geological objects.

The Museum also houses botanical and zoological specimens and has an extensive collection of palm leaf manuscripts. As such for Tourists, this is a worthy visit to explore the valuable masterpiece.  

Government Museum, Erode

Thindal Murugan Temple

The Thindal Murugan temple is a small hillock that is 8 km from Erode bus stand on the Perunduari road in Tamil Nadu. This temple is dedicated to Sri Velayudhaswami the other name of Lord Murugan. There is a presence of a golden chariot on the temple premises. Further, the eastern part of the hillock is known as keel Thindal and the western part is Mael Thindal. Lord Murugan is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati.

The temple has images of Lord shiva, Subramanyiyar, Valli Theyvani, Goddess Saraswathi, Laxmi, and Parvathi. Pilgrims visit this temple to celebrate the festival Panguni Uthiran which is considered an important worship place in south India. Moreover, it is also considered that the trip to Kongunadu is not complete without visiting this temple.

Thindal Murugan Temple

Bhavani Sangameshwarar Temple

The Bhavani Sangameshwarar Temple is situated on the confluence of the rivers Cauvery and Bhavani. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and houses Lord Sangameshwarar along with Goddess Vedanayaki. Further, William Garrow the collector of Coimbatore and Salem worships Goddess Vedanayaki of Bhavani.

The ivory cradle presented by him to the temple is marked as the signature. This temple is famous for performing the last rites of their ancestors on the river bank. Moreover, in the Tamil month, Chithirai special poojas are held to please Lord Shiva.

Bannari Amman Temple

This temple is located at a distance of around 84 km from Erode, Tamil Nadu.  Bannari Amman temple represents Goddess Mariamman and is a form of Maa Durga, Maha shakti, or Maha Kali. The Goddess Mariammam is also called the Goddess of rain. The temple has a large area and is at the foothill of Thimbam.

Further, the temple is known for its architecture, and devotees after darshan can have the anna prasadam that is supplied by the temple. Moreover, the Kundam festival is the annual festival that is held at this temple.

Chennimalai Murugan Temple

Chennimalai Murugan temple is located between Coimbatore and Erode and is 500 meters above sea level. It is famous for flora and fauna along with medicinal herbs and lush green forests. Further, it is dedicated to Lord Murugan and the deity is Siragiri Dhandayuthapani. The temple is situated on the banks of the Noyyal river and the sanctum sanctorum faces the east.

This hill temple conducts its pooja celebrations as per Karana, Kamiga, and Aagama regulations. Moreover, inside the temple shrines of Markandeswarar is to the right, and on the left the shrines of kasi Viswanathan and visalakshi are present. For devotees and visitors, this is a special place to seek protection, neutralize the ill effects of Mars, and seek forgiveness for past deeds.

Best time to visit Erode 

The best time to visit Erode is during the winter months as the climate will be just apt to avoid all the humid heat. Further, by this time the rains would have made the entire place green and fresh. For enjoying the greenery and nature scenic views, the Monsoon season will be the right choice. However, the summer season is not recommended as heat and humidity makes the experience uncomfortable.

How to reach Erode 

By Road

Erode is well connected by a road network and is 63 km from Salem. The nearest major cities are Coimbatore at a distance of 100 km, Tiruchappaalli at 198 km, and Mysore and Bangalore at 249 and 284 km respectively. It is well connected by public transport buses including private services.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Erode Junction and Erode is on the Pamnai-Chamarajanagar track line. Regular train services operate on this route and connect all major cities. Erode Junction station is just around 2 km from the city. Further, the station connects to all major cities such as Chennai, Puri, Mysore, Patna, and New Delhi.

By Air

The nearest airport is Coimbatore International airport and regular flight services connect almost all major cities and other international destinations. The airport is situated in Peelamedu and from here there is a well-connected road network to Erode. Moreover, the airport is just 10km away from the Coimbatore city center.
