Ashique Thahir is an entrepreneur and automobile enthusiast hailing from the state of Kerala in India. He is the owner and Executive Director of Thai Group, a business establishment with a strong presence in diverse industries such as FMCG, food, transport, and plantation.

Ashique Thahir is also the key person, the co-producer and co-host of ‘Car and Country’, the world-renowned travel and motoring television show aired on Amazon Prime. The show was in the news recently as its organizers have chosen Kerala, Ashiq’s homeland as one of the locations for shooting the program.

Born on 7th September 1978, Ashiq originally belongs to the Wayanad district of Kerala. He was born to PC Thahir, the founder and Chairman of Thai Group, and Sakkeena Thahir, a Director of the business concern.

Ashique also has a brother, Aghin who serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Team Thai.  Ashiq is married to Lamiya Ashique and they have three children Azam, Aira, and Aheb.

Ashique Thahir completed his schooling at St.Joseph High School at Sultan Bathery, Wayanad. To pursue his higher secondary education, he joined Bhavans Vidya Mandir, Kochi.

Later, after completing his engineering graduation from Manipal, Ashiq enrolled at the University of Central England, Birmingham for a postgraduate degree in marketing.

Ashiq’s father PC Thahir belonged to a business family and went on to found the Thai Group. He believed in his son’s dreams and encouraged Ashiq to pursue his ambition. Ashiq is actively involved in the expansion of his father’s business establishment, ‘Team Thai’. He loves architecture and design and he was the person who designed their office building located in the city of Kozhikode, Kerala.

Team Thai’s business empire is spread across multiple divisions. The group owns several reputed brands in the personal care products, toiletries, and detergent segments such as Gladys Toilet Soap, Iva Dish-Wash Gel, and SunPlus Liquid Detergent.

In 1992, the Thai group forayed into the logistics business by establishing Aghin Roadways (ARS) and has grown to be a prominent player providing transport services for many leading companies.

Aysha Plantations, owned by the group, has over 800 acres of land in the high ranges of Wayanad where they grow tea, coffee, pepper, ginger, etc. for both domestic use as well as export purposes. Last but not the least, the Thai group is also into the export of consumer and food products.

In 2016, the discussions between Ashiq and his automobile-crazy friend Deepak Narendran led to the birth of ‘Car and Country’, a travel and motoring television show of international repute.

Thus, Ashique became the co-producer and co-host of the show that was initially produced for Fox International. According to Ashiq, they later switched to Amazon Prime as they wanted to stream the program on the best platform available. 

Ashique Thahir Car Collection

An avid car enthusiast, Ashiq owns an enviable collection of luxury cars. He went on to set up ‘The Best Garage’ in Kerala and his automobile collection includes sports cars ranging from Ferrari 458, Porsche 991.1 GT3, Porsche 997 911, Lamborghini Huracan, and Lamborghini Urus.

In 2022, Ashiq took everyone by surprise when he fixed a 2005 model Porsche Carrera 911 on the wall of the Team Thai office in Kozhikode. It took five long months of effort to mount the two-tonne weighing vehicle on the wall.

Apart from several engineers and architects, Porsche Kochi, the dealer of Porsche cars in Kerala also extended their support for this fruitful endeavor.

• Ashiq was overwhelmed to hear his cousin saying that she would have watched the ‘Car and Country’ show even if he was not part of it. According to Ashiq, it was the biggest compliment he has ever received.

• According to him, a moment of realization never happened in his life. He says that his love for cars keeps growing day by day and he finds happiness in what he loves to do.  

• He believes that life is a journey and he tries to make the best out of it.

• Ashiq says that traveling in his luxury cars gives him a sense of satisfaction. He went on to add that it is indeed a dream come true for any car enthusiast.

• He finds it quite exciting to see many new youngsters from Kerala foray into the supercar industry.

• Ashiq’s favorite overseas travel destination is South Africa. According to Ashiq, it is a very peaceful place and he loved staying in Cape Town and enjoying every bit of their food and culture. His dream is to cover more underrated travel destinations in the world.

• During his engineering days at Manipal, Ashiq met Deepak who was studying for MBBS. In the post-class sessions, their discussions always used to revolve around automobiles.  

• When a lockdown was imposed due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, he missed traveling the most. Just before the announcement of the lockdown, he visited Turkey, Georgia, and Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

• Ashiq has covered over 1 lakh kilometers in his Porsche 911 and more than 50,000 in his Ferrari.

• Even before the launch of the show ‘Car and Country’, Ashiq and Deepak used to travel a lot together and they had covered many places in Europe.

• As long as he is alive, Ashiq wants to travel. He says that travel has helped him widen his perspectives on life. It was through traveling that he learned to observe people, various cultures, food, and languages.
