In July 2023, Ameesha Patel, the actress in the film ‘Gadar2’ raised serious allegations against its director Anil. Ameesha, in her social media post, accused the director and his team of mismanagement on the sets of the film.

According to the actress, Anil did not provide proper remuneration to technicians, makeup artists, and costume designers who worked in the movie. She also raised issues related to unpaid bills for accommodation, transportation, and food.

However, Anil quickly responded to Ameesha’s allegations, stating that all of them were false. The director said that he had no clue why she made such statements. Anil also added that she would like to thank Ameesha as she made his production house famous.

Anil was brought up in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. Later, he moved to Mumbai and worked in theater, poetry, and also wrote for radio. When he was 18, Anil got a chance to work as Assistant Director to Baldev Raj Chopra, a leading Hindi film director of the yesteryears. Thus, he assisted Baldev in films such as Pati Patni Aur Woh, The Burning Train, and Insaf Ka Tarazu.

Later, in 1980, Anil became an independent director with the film ‘Shradhanjali’. He was also the story writer and producer of the film. Raakhee played the lead role in the movie and it turned out to be a massive commercial success. It was followed by films such as Bandhan Kuchchey Dhaagon Ka, Hukumat, and Tahalka in which Anil donned the roles of director, producer, and story writer.

The turning point in the director’s career was the 2001 film ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’. With Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel playing the lead roles, the movie created history by becoming one of the all-time hits in the history of the Hindi film industry.

Anil later went on to direct several films such as The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo, Apne, Veer, and Singh Saab The Great. In his career, the director also introduced several heroines to Bollywood such as Divya Khosla Kumar, Zarine Khan, and Urvashi Rautela.

In 2018, Anil directed the film ‘Genius’ in which he launched his son Utkarsh Sharma. The latest movie directed by him is the 2023 August release ‘Gadar 2’, a sequel to Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
