This particular wildlife sanctuary belongs to the district of Thrissur, which is situated in the central part of the state of Kerala. In the district of Thrissur, you need to travel to the Taluk of Mukundapuram in order to reach the destination of this wildlife sanctuary. It was in the year 1984 that this particular sanctuary got established in the state of Kerala.

Nelliyampathi Hills are also a part of the Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary. This is also another factor of attraction bringing tourists to the destination of the sanctuary. Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary has also got another spelling variant known as the ‘Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary’. The highest peak in the region which is worth exploring on your trip to the sanctuary is Punda Peak and which has got an elevation of around 1116m.

Even if you are already visiting a wildlife sanctuary, there is also another wildlife sanctuary in nearby places of Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary which is the popular Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is also another important destination which is close to the sanctuary mentioned. Hence with proper planning, you can cover almost all three of the sanctuary destinations in the area. This would also help you get a clear picture of the biodiversity and landscape of the central side of the state of Kerala. 

The presence of the river of Kurumali is another important feature adding to the beauty and radiance of the place. It also enhances the cool and pleasant temperature experienced in the sanctuary surroundings. You can also find the river of Mupilam in the region of the sanctuary other than Kurumali.

These river banks are quite fertile and they are also the most favourable habitat for a lot of different species. Even if the sanctuary is spread over a vast area the major parts of the same are situated in a place called Echippara in the district of Thrissur. This location can be reached by travelling a distance of around 40 km from the city centre of Thrissur.

Chimmini Dam is another tourist attraction that can be visited while travelling to the sanctuary region. Also, make sure to get a permit for your visit from the Peechi Wildlife Division before heading out to the location.

Location 

As mentioned earlier, the Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the south Indian state of Kerala. In the territory of the state, this sanctuary comes in the district of Thrissur, which is in its central part.

If you are travelling from the neighbouring district of Kochi, which is one of the easily accessible locations from far-away places, you need to travel a duration of around 2 hours to reach the location.

The sanctuary and the entrance can be seen while travelling through the Chimmini Dam Road in the Pariyaram side of the district of Thrissur.

The climatic conditions experienced in the sanctuary region are similar to the other parts of the district of Thrissur. During the winters and the monsoons, the temperature will fall and reach up to 15 degree Celsius. During the summer months of the year, the temperature usually spikes and reaches 36 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall is also satisfactory in the region catering to the flourishing growth of the species inhabiting the sanctuary and its surroundings. 2980mm is the average measurement of rainfall received in the region of Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary.
