Disha Vakani Padia is an Indian television, film, and theatre actress who works in Hindi and Gujarati languages. At a very early age, Disha made her debut as a child artist in theatre.

However, she became a household name after playing the lead character of Dayaben Gada in the 2008 sitcom ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ which aired on SAB TV.

Disha has also played supporting roles in Hindi films such as Devdas and Jodhaa Akbar. The actress has won several coveted awards such as Indian Television Academy Awards, Zee Gold Awards, and Indian Telly Awards.

On 24th November 2015, Disha married Mayur Padia, a Mumbai-based Chartered Accountant. The actress’s marriage was an arranged one.

Disha’s husband Mayur is a partner at OKIE Ventures and also the co-founding partner and CFO at Trillium Venture Capital. Disha and Mayur are parents to their daughter Stuti and a son.

Dayaben, the popular character played by Disha in the serial ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ was speaking in a peculiar voice. Hence, rumors started doing the rounds that the actress is suffering from throat cancer.

However, Disha’s brother Mayur soon came out in public and dismissed all those rumors as baseless. The actor confirmed that everything is fine and that it was false news. Later, Neela Film Productions, the production company of the show also communicated to media that the word of Disha’s ailment was fake.

At a very young age, Disha was introduced to theatre by her father Bhim Vakani. Thus, Disha kickstarted her career as a child artist in theatre. Later, after completing her graduation, Disha went on to act in several popular plays such as Kamal Patel v/s Dhamal Patel, Baa Retire Thai Che, and Lali Lila.

In 1997, Disha forayed into films with ‘Kamsin: The Untouched’, the Amit Suryavanshi-directed Hindi movie. She played the character of Pinky in the film. Disha made her debut in Gujarati with the film ‘Pandadu Lilu Ne Rang Rato’ released in 1999.

The actress appeared on television for the first time with the 2003 serial ‘Shubh Mangal Savadhan’. It was followed by serials such as Khichdi, Instant Khichdi, Hero – Bhakti Hi Shakti Hai, and Aahat.

Disha got a major break in her career with the 2008 serial ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ which aired on SAB TV. The actress soon rose to fame as the lead character of Daya Jethalal Gada played by her became quite popular. Disha was also seen in supporting roles in several Hindi films such as Phool Aur Aag, Devdas, Mangal Pandey: The Rising, Jodhaa Akbar, C Kkompany, and Love Story 2050.  

After acting in television serials for a long time, Disha went on maternity leave in September 2017. Post that, the actress never returned to television and was neither seen on television nor social media.

In 2023 July, Asit Modi, the producer of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ announced that he will be soon bringing back Disha Vakani in the role of Dayaben.
