Kavya Maran is a businesswoman famously known as the CEO and owner of SunRisers Hyderabad, a franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Hailing from a powerful business family, she is also involved in the operations of Sun TV network, a mass media company that is part of Sun Group and one of Asia’s largest Television networks.

Kavya shot to fame in 2018 after she became the owner of the franchise SunRisers Hyderabad. An internet sensation, Kavya is always seen cheering for her team in the cricket stadiums.

Kavya Maran was born on 6 August 1992. Her father Kalanithi Maran is a media baron and the Chairman and founder of the Sun Group. A billionaire, Kalanithi owns several businesses ranging from television channels, newspapers, weeklies, DTH services, FM radio stations, a movie production house, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, the cricket franchise. 

Kavya’s mother Kavery Maran hails from Coorg and she is one of the highest-paid business executives in the country. Apart from being the CEO of Solar TV Community Restricted, Kaveri also serves as the Executive Director of several companies such as Sun TV Network Ltd., Kal Radio Ltd., South Asia FM Ltd., Udaya FM Pvt Ltd, etc.

Kavya’s grandfather Late Murasoli Maran was a politician and has been a Union Minister in the Central Government three times. Kavya’s father Kalanithi has other political connections as well as he is the nephew of the Late Muthuvel Karunanidhi, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Relationship

As of now, Kavya Maran is single and is not in any relationship. 

Back in 2017, there were rumors doing the rounds that Kavya is in a relationship with Akhil Akkineni, the Telugu actor and son of star couple Nagarjuna and Amala. During that time, the IPL matches were going on and the onlookers at the VIP enclosure were busy talking about Kavya Maran and Akhil stealing glances at each other while cheering the Hyderabad team. Rumors were also rife that Kavya is having a relationship with the scion of the TVS family.

However, all those rumors were laid to rest and as per sources, Kavya is not dating anyone currently.

Education

Kavya is a commerce graduate and studied at Stella Maris College in Chennai, an autonomous college affiliated with the University of Madras. Later, she completed her MBA from Warwick Business School (WBS) in the UK. WBS is one among the elite group of international business schools with triple accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA.

Controversies

On 9th April 2023, in the IPL match held between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings, SRH owner Kavya was watching the game from the grandstand. The match was getting quite tense as Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of Punjab Kings put forward a spectacular performance in the first innings by scoring a massive 99 runs to raise a defending total of 143 runs. At that time, the cameras panned to Kavya Maran and her father Kalanithi who was seated in the stands. All of a sudden, an annoyed Kavya lost her cool and said “ “Haat Yaar!”. 

The video of Kavya’s reaction to the media soon went viral. In no time, the internet was flooded with memes on the sudden, unexpected response from SunRisers Hyderabad’s CEO. 

Profession

In October 2012, Sun TV group bought the IPL Hyderabad franchise for Rs.425 crore. It was following the debt-ridden Deccan Chronicle, the parent company of the franchise Deccan Chargers going bankrupt and BCCI terminating the contract with them.

Later, in 2018, Kavya Maran became the center of attraction after she became the CEO and owner of SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH). She is actively involved in the management of SRH and also participates in the IPL auctions. Whenever her team plays at IPL, Kavya is seen in the stands extending support to the team members by cheering them.

In March 2019, Kavya was inducted into the Board of Directors of Sun TV Network Ltd. which heralded the entry of one more next-gen entrepreneur to the industry. Before that, Kavya Maran had done her internship in various departments of Sun TV ranging from content to programming. After working for a few years with the company, she went abroad to pursue her MBA. Later, after returning to India, Kavya started heading the operations of SRH.

Reportedly, Kavya’s net worth is around $50 million which is approximately 409 crores in Indian rupee. As of 2023, Kavya’s father Kalanithi Maran’s net worth stands at US$2.3 billion.

Lesser Known Facts About Kavya Maran

• On 19th January 2023, in the SA20 league, a match was going on between Paarl Royals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape, a sister franchise of Sunrisers Hyderabad. The venue was Paarl, South Africa, and Kavya Maran was present in the stands to cheer her team. After the eighth over of the Paarl Royals’ innings, the camera zoomed towards a fan who was holding a placard in his hands with the words “ “KAVYA MARAN, WILL YOU MARRY ME?” followed by the emoji of a heart. The video was posted on the official Twitter account of the league and the news soon went viral.

• On April 7th, 2023, Kavya was watching the IPL match between her franchise and Lucknow Super Giants at the Lucknow stadium. SRH’s Fazalhaq Farrooqi was the bowler and batsman Kyle Mayers hit the ball that was caught by fielder Mayank Agarwal. All of a sudden, an elated Kavya Maran, stood from her seat and started jumping with joy. An overjoyed Kavya was seen raising both her hands and Twiterrati was fast enough to post the video on the microblogging platform.

• Kavya’s father has received Young Businessman awards from CNBC and Ernst & Young. He was also named the “Television King of Southern India” by Forbes magazine.
