In Uttar Pradesh, Azamgarh is an important town of historical significance with old monuments, cultural fairs, and ancient temples. During the 17th century, it is founded by Azam, whereas Azam’s father, Vikramjit had changed to Islam and wedded a Mohammedan woman.

Therefore, This is greatly a Muslim city with robust influences of its erstwhile rulers still visible today. Whereas Azam gave his popular name to the Azamgarh, Azmat constructed the post and settled the market of Azmagarh around the pargana Sagri and did several other important works across the place which had to do. 

In addition, there aren’t several things and attractions to visit in this town. Azamgarh is also home to the popular mosque of Rajaji Sahab and the temple of Thakuji. Positioned on the banks of the Tons River, also known as the Tamsa River, the city offers several beautiful views to tourists.

Durvasa

At a distance of 32 km from Azamgarh, Durvasa lies on the Sangam of the Mahjee and Ton Rivers. Durvasa is better known for its mela and rishi dham.

In Durvasa, the Durvasa Rishi ashram is one of the better-known places because, during the old days, thousands of students came to attain knowledge of the prevalent fair held every year at the event of Kartik Purnima. It is a popular place as from all over the country visit this place frequently. 

Mehnagar

At a distance of nearly 27 km from Azamgarh, this is another famous place on the list to see across the historical city of Azamgarh. This beautiful place is jam-packed during a religious fair held on the Madilaha ponds every year.

It is one of the perfect places to visit in Azamgarh as there are some interesting places to visit in Mehnagar. Nearby this place you will also find Mehnagar Fort, Daulat Ibrahim Tomb, etc. 

Govind Sahab

Govind Sahab is the center of faith. At this place, Mahatma Govind Sahab is worshipped. On the border of Ambedkar Nagar and Azamgarh, it is positioned. It is a popular place as every year a fair is held for a complete month and on the day of Govind Dashami, it is believed that every pearl is finished by Baba.

In addition, at this fair, a great number of cows, horses, Buffaloes, elephants, donkeys, and camels are usually sold and bought. On the day of Govind Dashami, devotees come to visit this place not only from the country but also from abroad. While, at a distance of 47 km from Azamgarh, this place is located. 

Mubarakpur

A trip to Azamgarh is incomplete without visiting this place as this place is having a very interesting story and is another popular place in Azamgarh. This place is earlier known as Qasimabad.

A Sufi rulers name Raja Mubarak, from Manikpurkara, restored the great glory of this place as this place was deteriorating, and declining which is also a story behind the name change of this destination.

In addition, the Mubarakpur-manufactured Benarasi-style Sarees are famous all over the country and are usually exported from India to other parts of the globe. 

Bhawar Nath Temple

Bhawar Nath Temple is the most popular place in Azamgarh which is situated on Azamgarh’s Western end. By the time this temple is so developed. Whereas, during 1951 year, the foundation of this temple is laid down, and the construction was finally finished in 1958.

This temple is having great significance in the Hindu religion as the legend behind this temple is the Hindu holy man Bhannathnath. The legend meditated on Shiva’s statue across the area while keeping an eye on his cow on the other side.

Moreover, the festival of Mahashivratri is an auspicious event for the locals here as people make a point of paying a visit to Baba. This temple has different beliefs which makes this mandir jam-packed on Mondays. This mandir is having 4 doors which are packed with devotees and visitors must wait in long queues for hours.

After fulfilling the wishes of worshippers, people offer Kadahi to Baba and wish him prosperity for a complete year. 

Avantikapuri (Awank)

Avantikapuri is located nearly 20 km from Azamgarh and nearby there is an Awnitkapuri Pond. Whereas, Avantikapuri is better known for both its ponds and amazing temples. People mostly come here to take a religious bath in the pond.

It is a popular place due to an ancient legend of a ‘Yagya’ held by a king named Janmejai. This king thought that by doing this ‘Yagya’, he could rid the planet of all the snakes that ever existed. Moreover, it is a very calm and peaceful place where anyone can calm and relax their mind from the hustle and bustle of the running places. 

Best Time To Visit Azamgarh 

The best time is between October and December. Throughout these months, the monsoon will have finished and the winter season would set in. The temperature is in the vary from 15°C to 27°C. The weather is sunny throughout the daytime and cool at night time.

Foremost festivals that are celebrated socially such as Durga Pooja are an attraction throughout this season. Different folk songs and folk dances also functioned as a part of the festivities.

How To Reach Azamgarh? 

By Flight: At Varanasi, the Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, is the nearest airport to Azamgarh at a distance of nearly 95 km. There are several flights from this airport to prime cities in India like Agra, Thiruvananthapuram Delhi, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad.

The airport of Varanasi is also easily reachable from different international cities. Visitors coming from other cities such as London, New York, Sydney, etc. can link to Varanasi from the international airports in Delhi or Mumbai, both of which are well-linked to different global cities.

By Bus: Bus transport from Azamgarh to different cities within the state is managed by UPSRTC and different private bus companies. A/C and non-A/C Volvo buses are also accessible for commuting. The Azamgarh bus depot is one of the supreme across eastern Uttar Pradesh. The city is also well-linked to other cities in India such as Delhi, Lucknow, etc. 

By Train: Azamgarh is having its own railway station which comes under the Varanasi division of North Eastern Railways. It has a single-line track and is called Sidhari Halt Railway Station.

Azamgarh has trains to foremost cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Varanasi, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Kolkata. Daily trains are accessible to Varanasi, Delhi, and Lucknow. Some of the express trains to Azamgarh are Kaifiyat Express, Godaan Express, Utsarg Express, and Kashi Express.
