Srijit Mukherji is an Indian director, screenwriter, and actor who works primarily in Bengali films. After his stint in the English professional theatre circuit, Srijit wrote and directed his debut movie ‘Autograph’ in 2010 which earned both critical acclaim and commercial success.

Later, his 2014 film ‘Jaatishwar’ went on to win four national awards at the 61st National Film Awards. It was followed by several award-winning movies such as Chotushkone, Ek Je Chhilo Raja, and Gumnaami. Apart from Bengali, Srijit has also directed Hindi movies such as Begum Jaan, and Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga.

Srijit Mukherji Family

Srijit was born on 23 September 1977 to Samaresh Mukherji, Head of the Department of Architecture at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Sumita Sarkar, a doctor. The director also has a sister.

Later, Srijit met Rafiath Rashid Mithila, a Bangladeshi actress for the first time on Facebook. On 6th December 2019, the couple got married in Srijit’s South Kolkata flat. Mithila was first married to Bangladeshi musician Tahsan Rahman Khan in 2006 and they got divorced in 2017. She has a daughter Arya from her first marriage.

Srijit did his schooling at Dolna Day School and South Point High School in Kolkata. Subsequently, the director joined Presidency College, Kolkata, and earned a degree in economics. Later, Srijit joined Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and pursued his postgraduation in environmental economics and MPhil.  

Srijit Mukherji Controversies

In 2018 October, Srijit was embroiled in a #MeToo controversy. It all started after a social media user alleged the director of commenting on his female friend’s looks. According to the netizen, his female friend who is using a German number approached the director to assist him on the sets.

However, that lady was shocked after Srijit commented on how she looked. Soon after the controversy started on social media, the director, in his Facebook post, was quick to deny the allegations of non-consensual flirting and harassment charges raised against him.

Post his studies, Srijith joined IRI Symphony, Bangalore as an econometrician and business analyst. During those days, he tried his hand at the English professional theatre circuit in Bangalore and Delhi. Later he quit his job at IRI Symphony to pursue a career in films, the area that he was passionate about.

Apart from acting in theatre, Srijit wrote and directed ‘Mindgame’. In April 2008, he went on to launch his own troupe, ‘Pandora’s Act’. Later, Srijit became an assistant director, lyricist, and actor in films such as ‘Madly Bangalee’ and ‘ Iti Mrinalini’. 

In 2010, Srijit turned independent director with the film ‘Autograph’. With Prosenjit Chatterjee, Nandana Sen, and Indraneil Sengupta in lead roles, the movie was a blockbuster and went on to win 41 awards. Srijit soon made his acting debut with ‘ Gaaner Opare’, a Bengali television serial directed by Rituparno Ghosh. 

It was followed by Srijit directing films such as Baishe Srabon, Hemlock Society, and Mishawr Rawhoshyo. The director’s fifth film Jaatishwar went on to bag 4 national awards at the 61st National Awards 2014 including Best Music Direction, Playback Singing, Costume, and Makeup. 

In 2017, Srijit directed his first Bollywood film ‘Begum Jaan’. Apart from films, Srijit has also directed web series such as Feluda Pherot, Ray (Season 1) and Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke. 

The upcoming film directed by Srijit is ‘Dawshom Awbotaar’, with Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu U Sengupta, and Anirban Bhattacharya in the lead roles.
