Subi Suresh: All You Need To Know About Popular Comedy Artist!

Late Subi Suresh was a popular comedy artist, film actress, and television presenter from India. She stepped into the industry as a mimicry artist and later carved a niche for herself in Malayalam comedy shows that were once dominated by male artists.

Subi rose to fame with the portrayal of her hilarious characters in ‘Cinemala’, a Malayalam television parody series aired on Asianet, and soon became a household name among Kerala’s television-watching audience. She made her acting debut in Malayalam movies with ‘Kanaka Simhasanam’ and later went on to act in several blockbuster movies and television serials.

In terms of social media popularity, Subi has a massive fan following with a whopping 2.2 million followers on Facebook and 2.23 lakh subscribers on YouTube. 

Subi was suffering from a liver-related ailment for some time and was getting prepared for a liver transplant. However, she was diagnosed with pneumonia later and breathed her last at a private hospital in Aluva, Kochi on 22nd February 2023.

Subi’s father’s name is Suresh and her mother’s name is Ambika. She also has a younger brother by the name of Eby Suresh who was seven years younger than her.

Affairs

In an interview with Kerala Kaumudi, Subi once revealed that she was in love with two to three people. Though they didn’t dump her, Subi couldn’t get along with them and hence parted ways with mutual consent.

She went on to add that her family was quite important to her and if a person comes into her family, it has to be the right person and he should love her family more than her. Subi also mentioned that though many proposals had come from the USA, she was not able to find the apt person.

Till her 4th standard, Subi studied at Sri Venkateshwara School, Tripunithura. Later, due to financial constraints, she got enrolled at the Government girl’s high school, Ernakulam, and her medium was English. Later she joined St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam to pursue her graduation.

Controversies

In 2021, Subi was dragged into controversy following her Facebook post. Subi, clad in a red and black colored dress with a hair bun, thick black goggles, a nose ring, and a bindi, resembled a feminist, and her photograph was accompanied by the caption ‘feminist’.

It led to a furor on social media and Subi deleted her Facebook post later. Later she posted the same photo on FB again with the caption ‘ suggest a good caption for this photo’. Subi clarified that it was her character from Comedy Thillana, a program aired on Kairali TV and some people misinterpreted the post.

She went on to state that she doesn’t possess deep knowledge about feminism and deleted her earlier post as she didn’t want to stir controversy.

Subi had once shared a photo of hers on social media where she was seen wearing shorts. A netizen posted derogatory comments on her photograph by stating that she should maintain decency while appearing in the public domain.

Subi, in her FB post, gave a fitting reply to that person in her signature sarcastic style stating that she is fed up with such uncles who are into moral policing and that person by commenting might have tried to gain popularity.

During her school days, Subi used to be quite passionate about break dancing. Later, after completing her graduation from St Teresa’s College, she participated in several dance programs. Later Subi joined Cochin Kalabhavan and it paved the way for her mimicry performances to gain popularity.

However, it was ‘Cinemala’ that proved to be a turning point in her acting career. Later Subi went on to act in her first Malayalam movie, ‘Kanaka Simhasanam’ directed by Rajasenan, an ace director in Malayalam. It was followed by several hit movies such as ‘Grihanathan’, ‘Elsamma Enna Aankutty’, ‘Thaskara Lahala’,  ‘Drama’ and ‘Karyasthan’.

Subi was equally successful in television shows as well. ‘Kuttipattaalam’, a program aired on Surya TV where she used to interact with kids, had gained enormous popularity among the audience. Her other major television show was ‘Made for each other’, a program aired on Mazhavil Manorama.

Subi’s major source of income was from acting in television shows, serials, and movies. She also used to be part of stage shows conducted abroad in several foreign countries.

Lesser Known Facts About Subi Suresh

• At school, two girls, Sulekha and Asha had a crush on Subi. Subi was spotting a haircut during those days and the girls had presumed that she is a boy. When she didn’t go to school for a few days they enquired why she was absent and they also asked her to share her photograph.

• During her school days, Subi suffered a burn while she was cooking.

• The reason that joined St.Theresa’s college for college studies was that there was an army NCC wing in that college. In all other colleges, only naval NCC was there.

• After Subi passed away, actor Tiny Tom disclosed that Subi’s marriage was almost finalized and she was really happy about that.

• A video by Subi had gone viral on YouTube just days before her death. In that video, she was seen saying that it was her laziness, lifestyle, and irregular diet that worsened her health condition. Another reason cited by her was that she failed to take medicine on time and hence was suffering from the consequences. The actress also added that she became severely ill and was not able to eat anything because of body pain, chest pain, and gastric problems.

• In an interview, Subi disclosed that her father used to drink alcohol. Though he had stopped that habit, some of his friends took advantage of the situation and he was forced to go back to that habit again.
