Dhanushkodi can incontestably be named a hidden natural beauty of South India. While not different individuals live here due to its geographical and climatic conditions, it still is one of the most captivating places for tourists and quest lovers who continue to visit Dhanushkodi.

Location 

Dhanushkodi is an unregulated town on the southernmost point of Pamban Island in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is southeast of Pamban and nearly 24 kilometers (15 mi) west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The town was destroyed in the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and leftovers uninhabited in the aftermath.

History Of Dhanushkodi 

Nearly five decades ago, this place was fairly a busy town situated along South India’s coast having all the supplies like a railway station, police station, etc. Everything was going faultlessly until the day when an enormous storm engulfed the complete region.

The day was December 21, 1964. The tides had gone as high as 20 feet and left nothing but devastation and ruins. After this catastrophic event, the government professed this place to be squalid. And now in the present timeline, only a few individuals live here.

However, it endures being a place that has time and again proven to be a prodigious destination for travelers and history and mythology admirers.  

Climatic Conditions 

The climate of Tamil Nadu is basically tropical. During May and June, the newest months, maximum daily temperatures in Chennai average nearly 100 °F (38 °C), while minimum temperatures average in the low 80s F (upper 20s C).

The 50 kilometers long and 3-kilometer-wide bridge begins as a chain of shoals from Dhanushkodi (tip of India’s Pamban Bridge) and finishes at Sri Lanka’s Mannar Island. Adam’s Bridge, also well known as Rama’s Bridge or Rama Setu, is identified as a mythical bridge that is majorly a chain of coral reefs and sandbanks.

This mythical bridge has a lot of controversies associated with its origin and structure. The place proposes a very relaxed aura and is a wonderful experience for visitors.

Dhanushkodi is the latter tip of Rameshwar Island, and Ram Setu Point is situated a few meters away from Dhanushkodi. Adam’s Bridge is an age-old structure that is supposed to be nearly 1.7 million years old.

Pamban Island

Not only does the park have three marine ecosystems, which are the coral reef, seagrass, and mangroves, but it is also home to salt marshes and precise algal communities. The dissimilar estuaries, beaches, and forests in the park further amplify its beauty and present nature in all its beauty.

Best Time to Visit 

Dhanushkodi weather is at its best throughout winter, during the months from October to February, making it the best time to visit Dhanushkodi Beach. It can be celebrated in the morning, afternoon, and evening. There is no Dhanushkodi Beach as certain, travelers can visit it on any day of the week, at the hour that greatly suits them. However, visiting the beach at night should be evaded at all costs.  

How to Reach? 

The new road has made Dhanushkodi much more available. Before it was constructed, the only way to arrive at the town was to take a private minibus or jeep around the sand or walk along the seashore. It was wholly cut off from civilization. Now, you can drive there sprightly in your own vehicle.

The road is a leeway of National Highway 87, which runs from the mainland to Pamban Island and Rameshwaram. Formerly, it finished at Mukuntharayar Chathiram but now remains 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from Mukuntharayar Chathiram to Dhanushkodi, and a further nearly 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) from Dhanuskhodi to Arichal Munai (Erosion Point).

The ending stretch is severely controlled by India’s Border Security Force. Entry is only allowed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. (although it’s probable to remain there until 6 p.m.).

From Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi the travel time is nearly 30-45 minutes. If you don’t have your own car or motorcycle, there are different options accessible relying on your budget.

The cheapest choice is to take the state government bus (Route 3) from the bus stop nearby Agni Theetham in Rameshwaram. The frequency of buses is nearly every 30 minutes and tickets cost 30 rupees per individual, one way.

The last bus comes back just before 6 p.m. However, the problem is that you won’t be able to stop at other tourist sites, such as temples, along the way. Taking an auto rickshaw is an alternative choice. Suppose to pay about 800 rupees for a round trip. If you rent a taxi or car and driver, the cost will be nearly 1,500 rupees.

Rameshwaram is well-associated with other main cities on the mainland by train and bus. Crossing Pamban Bridge is a high point. It’s suggested that you experience it by train, in at least one direction, as the railway line lies outstandingly close to the sea. 

Food And Accommodation 

You’ll inevitability to stay in Rameshwaram, or somewhere else on Pamban Island, as there are no possible accommodations around Dhanushkodi.

If cost isn’t a concern, the Hyatt Place Rameswaram is the most comfortable hotel, with double rooms from nearly 5,500 rupees per night and great food facilities. Daiwik Hotel and Hotel Ashoka are prevalent mid-range choices.

Rates begin from nearly 3,000 rupees per night for a double room. Otherwise, Blue Coral Cottage is great for budget visitors. Double rooms cost nearly 1,400 rupees per night upwards.

Those who desire relaxed boutique beach accommodations can choose from Cabana Coral Reef or one of the two Quest Expeditions properties, Kathadi South and Kathadi North.

Kathadi South is pastoral, with beach huts and tents. Kathadi North is upmarket, with beautiful cottages that have open-air bathrooms and gardens. Both propose kite surfing lessons during a season.
