For the first time ever in the history of the Indian film industry, an Indian movie is being remade in the Korean language. It’s ‘Drishyam’, the blockbuster movie directed by ace director Jeethu Joseph that has been picked for the historical remake.
As per news reports, Anthology Studios from South Korea has joined hands with India’s Panorama Studios to come up with the Korean remake of the film. Panorama Studios is owned by Kumar Mangat Pathak, the manager of Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan.
On the other hand, Anthology Studios was cofounded by Choi Jae-won along with Parasite fame Song Kang-ho and eminent director Kim Jee-Woon. The news of Drsihyam’s Korean remake was announced on Sunday at the Indian pavilion of the Cannes Film Festival where both Kumar Mangat Pathak and Choi Jae-won were present.
While sharing the news, Kumar said that he is excited that the Drishyam franchise is remade in Korean, a first for a Hindi movie. He stated that apart from boosting Hindi cinema’s reach outside India, it will also help put Hindi cinema on the global map.
Choi said that they are thrilled that they got an opportunity to remake a blockbuster Hindi movie with a touch of originality from Korean cinema. He also said that the remake holds great significance as it is the first major co-production between India and Korea.
Though many Korean movies have been remade into Indian languages in the past, it is the first time that an Indian movie is remade into Korean.
Later Panorama Studios shared the news of the remake on their Instagram page with the caption ‘The biggest collaboration ever’. A photograph is also shared where both Kumar and Choi are seen posing with their thumbs up. As per news reports, the Korean remake of ‘Drishyam’ will be helmed by Kim Jee-Won, the director of ‘Cobweb’ and Song Kang-ho will feature as the main character.
The 2013 crime thriller movie ‘Drishyam’ was originally made in Malayalam with superstar Mohanlal in the lead role. The plot of Drishyam revolves around Georgekutty, a cable TV operator, and his family.
They come across an unexpected incident in their life, a murder of a youngster in which Georgekutty’s daughter also gets accidentally involved. The story progresses with thrilling moments of how Georgekutty makes a successful attempt to save his daughter. The film turned out to be a resounding success which later led to its remake in various South Indian languages.
The remakes include the Kannada version of Drishya released in 2014 and the Telugu movie Drushyam released in the same year. In 2015, the Tamil remake Papanasam and the Hindi remake Drishyam starring Ajay Devgn were released. The film has also been remade in foreign languages including Dharmayuddhaya in Sinhala (Sri Lanka) and Sheep Without a Shepherd in Chinese.
Following the massive success of Drishyam, its sequel Drishyam 2 was also made in Malayalam. Released in 2021, the film was written and directed by Jeethu Joseph.
