Hemis- India, Amazing Places To Visit!

As beautiful as Leh and Ladakh are, so is the nearby town of Hemis. Its festivities draw visitors world and the country, and they are noted for their bright colors and high energy. Furthermore, the beautiful and very uncommon snow leopard may be seen in Hemis National Park.

One other must-see landmark is the Hemis Monastery. The monastic settlement probably dates back to the eleventh century. Near Hemis, researchers uncovered a translated version of Naropa’s biography.

There is a widespread misunderstanding that this monastery has any connection to Naropa, who is traditionally regarded as having been one of the most notable students of the great Yogi Tilopa.

1. Hemis Monastery

Located 45 kilometers from Leh, next to the Indus River, lies Hemis monastery, the largest and wealthiest of all the monasteries in the Ladakh region. The stunning architecture and meditative ambiance of Hemis Monastery are fascinating and reassuring.

Hemis Monastery

The Drukpa sect founded the sanctuary, which is located on a hillside. There are also other unique festivals and events that you must check out. About three kilometers away from this gompa is a holy hermitage founded by Gyalwa Kotsang.

His fingerprint and footprint are etched onto a rock in a neighboring cave.

2. Hemis National Park

More than half of the world’s endangered snow leopard population lives in this massive national park, which covers more than 4,000 square kilometers and is located at a height of between 3,000 and 6,000 meters.

Hemis National Park

Hemis High Altitude National Park, founded in 1981, is Jammu and Kashmir’s largest national park. There are many different kinds of plants and animals in this park, Among the most notable animals that might be seen in the park.

They are Eurasian brown bears, Tibetan wolves, and red foxes. As a prime location from which to see the raptors of the Trans-Himalayan region, the area attracts many birdwatchers. some of which are uncommon or endangered, and it is bounded north by the Indus River.

Hiking across the park’s scenic landscape is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but motorized vehicles are prohibited.

3. In the Stakna Gompa

The hill on which the monastery sits resembles the snout of a tiger, thus the name “tiger’s nose” (Stakna Gompa) for the sanctuary. Within the Leh region, Stakna is where you’ll find the breathtaking Stakna Monastery, set on a hilltop right next to the Indus River.

Stakna Gompa

This monastery was built in the sixteenth century by the famed Bhutanese scholar and political figure Chosje Jamyang Palkar. Approximately thirty monks now reside in this monastery, which has a breathtaking view of the Hemis region.

You’ll find Paradise at Stakna Monastery, with its rolling rocky hills, dense coniferous trees, lush green meadows, pictures of the snow-capped peaks of the great Himalayas, and the calm blue waters of the Indus running through it all under the immensity of the dazzling blue sky.

4. The Shang Gompa

Amid the rugged Himalayan scenery, the peaceful Shang Gompa offers a pleasant respite. The monastery’s spectacular splendor, the chanting of the monks, and the cool, clean mountain air will help you relax despite being located 39 kilometers from the city center.

Shang Gompa

The monastery also has priceless artwork depicting various deities adorned with jewels, lotus flowers, human skulls, swords, silk robes, and Tiger skins. The stunning scenery makes this monastery one of the most desirable places to visit.

5. Gotsang Gompa

Gotsang Gompa is a place of reflection and peace where one can find respite from daily life’s bustle. It is close to the Hemis monastery and can be reached on foot. The Gotsang Gompa is a Buddhist monastery in a remote part of Tibet.

Gotsang Gompa

Are you extending your stay? There are plenty of places to stay in this area and the surrounding ones if you need somewhere to lay your head. According to legend, monks may live in complete isolation for years in the cramped chambers of this gompa.

Asceticism is gaining popularity as a way of life, and people from all over the world go here to try it out. Hemis, a hidden paradise in the Himalayas, is home to a diverse range of intriguing species that thrive on the region’s complicated and gorgeous landscape.

Hemis is perfect for a couple’s getaway since it allows you to disconnect from the stresses of city life and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature among the pine trees and green valleys.

6. The Pangong Tso Lake

The majority of visitors visiting Ladakh come to see Pangong Lake. It is a landlocked (endorheic) lake at 4,350 meters. It is also known as Pangong Tso and runs from India to Tibet. The whole route is 12 kilometers in length.

Pangong Tso Lake

Pangong Lake takes up almost 60% of the Tibetan Plateau. Depending on the time of year and the lighting conditions, the lake may seem azure to pale blue, green to even gray. Since it was the setting for the Bollywood movie “3 Idiots,” tourists refer to it as Ladakh Lake.

Since it is on the Sino-Indian Actual Line of Control, access to the beautiful Pangong Lake requires an inside-line permit. Indian citizens are exempt from the requirement that foreign nationals travel in groups of at least three individuals with a licensed guide.

A ticket may be bought for a small fee at the Leh visitor center. Because of its elevation, even though Pangong Lake is salty, it freezes over entirely throughout the winter, when temperatures range from -5°C to 10°C.

How To Reach In Hemis?

The most convenient airport to Hemis is Leh airport. It is possible to fly to Leh regularly from the cities of Delhi, Chandigarh, and Srinagar. The nearest station is the Jammu train station. Hemis itself and the roads around it are in great shape.

From cities like Srinagar, Manali, Delhi, and more, you may get a bus to Leh. You may take a taxi, limo, or private vehicle to your destination.
