Henley Passport Index 2023: Here Is the Most Powerful Passport In The World For 2023!

Every year, Henley Global ranks passports from around the world based on curated data. These ranks depend on the holder’s capability of accessing destinations without a visa beforehand. The data for the same is extracted from IATA – International Air Transport Association.
It is the largest and most accurate database collector of travel-related information. The list of passport ranking for 2023 is out and it includes 199 passports and covers 227 worldwide destinations! Here are the results –
- Japan: The country is at the top of the Henley Passport Index for 2023 and this is not the first time. Japan has been consecutively winning the title for 5 years. Its residents can travel to 193 countries without acquiring a visa beforehand. They either do not need it at all or can get the same upon arrival. The country is the most powerful because it allows the citizens to see a large part of the world and enjoy international mobility.
- South Korea and Singapore: 192 countries
- Spain and Germany: 190 countries
- Luxembourg, Italy, and Finland: 189 countries
- Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, and Austria: 188 countries
- United Kingdom, Ireland, France, and Portugal: 187 countries
- United States, New Zealand, Belgium, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Norway: 186 countries
- Greece, Australia, Canada, and Malta: 185 countries
- Poland and Hungary: 184 countries
- Slovakia and Lithuania: 183 countries
These were the list of the top 10 countries that hold the strongest passport. Countries like Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, North Korea, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka stand at the bottom of the list.

Although India stands at the 5th position in the list of largest economies, the country still ranks poorly when it comes to the strongest passports. Indian citizens can visit only 59 countries without a prior visa and contributes only about 6.7% of the world GDP.
They can travel to countries like Iran, Sri Lanka, Macao, Indonesia, Thailand, Mauritius, Qatar, Zimbabwe, Bhutan, and Kenya. India lost its free visa to Serbia because of the increased migration rate.
What Is The Ranking system Of Henley?
The passport index team compares the access of 199 passports to 227 destinations. If a country doesn’t require a visa for one country, the value is 1. This also applies in case the traveler can obtain the visa through an electronic travel authority, on arrival, or visitor’s permit.
According to the index, only about 17% of countries give free travel access to over 80% of the destinations.
Another passport index ranking was conducted by Arton Capital that compares the data of 193 countries within 6 territories. This index is updated continuously and according to the latest ranking, the country at the top is the United Arab Emirates.
It has a score of 181 currently. Around 11 countries have secured the 2nd position and that includes South Korea, Austria, Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Spain, Luxembourg, France, Italy, and Sweden.
