Rishab Shetty’s Kantara 2 Plot Is Done, And Filming Will Start In June

The news is finally out. Director-writer Rishab Shetty has finished writing the script of Kantara 2, the prequel to the blockbuster Kannada movie ‘Kantara’. Vijay Kiragandur, the founder of the production company Hombale Films confirmed that Rishab is planning to begin the shoot of the movie in June. Since a part of the script demands the filming to be done in the rainy season, the makers are waiting till the month of June. The makers of Kantara 2 are planning for a pan-India release and the movie will hopefully be released in April or May 2024.
Apparently, Rishab has already completed scouting for locations for shooting the movie. In order to find the apt location, early this year the director had been on a long recce to the coastal areas of Karnataka and forest regions located nearby.
Surprisingly, Rishabh revealed earlier in February that Kantara 2 will be a prequel to Kantara, the first movie. According to him, what the audience has already watched is part 2 and part 1 will come out next year.
He said that the idea for Kantara 2 came to him while he was making the first movie because the story of Kantara is more complicated. The action thriller movie Kantara was released in 2022 and the director-scriptwriter Rishabh himself played the lead role in the film. Apart from Rishabh, the other main characters in the movie were played by Kishore, Achyuth Kumar, and Sapthami Gowda.
Shot in Keradi in coastal Karnataka, the theme of Kantara is based on the conflict between nature and human beings. The story of Kantara happens in a South Karnataka village where a king donated the land to the villagers 150 years back. The protagonist in the movie, Murali is an upright forest officer and he is on a mission to curb the cutting of trees and hunting in that land, which is now a reserve forest. The villagers who believe that the land was gifted to them as a boon from their Daiva don’t listen to Murali. Subsequently, Murali is seen to be at loggerheads with a Kambala champion, the character played by Rishabh.
Made with a budget of Rs 16 crore, Kantara went on to collect a whopping Rs.450 crore at the box office. According to the director, Kantara 2 will be a lavish film and they will be investing more money in it.
Kantara completed 100 days at the theatres and was also released on Amazon Prime, the OTT platform. Originally made in Kannada, Kantara was later released in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi following an overwhelming response from movie watchers. Kantara holds the distinction of being the highest-ever rated Indian movie on IMDB, with a rating of 9.4. The movie broke the records of KGF Chapter 2 and SS Rajamouli’s RRR which had ratings of 8.4 and 8 respectively. Tamil superstar Dhanush showered praises on Kantara by tweeting that the movie is mindblowing and it is a must-watch.
