Shamna Kasim, also known by her stage name Poorna is an Indian film actress who works in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu movies. A trained classical dancer, Shamna entered into television with  ‘Super Dancer’, a dance reality show aired on Amrita TV.

Later in 2004, the actress made her debut in Malayalam films with ‘Manjupoloru Penkutti’, directed by Kamal. It was followed by several memorable roles in Malayalam such as Ali Bhai, Chattakaari, and Madhura Raja. Shamna also made her mark in Tamil with films including Savarakathi and Thalaivi and in Telugu with Avunu and Dasara.

Shamna Kasim Family

The actress was born on 24 May 1989 to Kasim and Ramla Beevi. The youngest in her family, Shamna has three elder sisters and an elder brother, and all her siblings are married.

Shamna Kasim Relationships

During the program ‘Marhaba’ held in Dubai, Shamna happened to meet its organizer Shanid bin Mohammed for the first time. Hailing from Malappuram in Kerala, Shanid is the founder and CEO of JBS Group of Companies, a leading consulting company in the UAE. After talking to each other, Shamna and Shanid developed a liking for each other. Later, their families had discussions and the marriage was fixed within a month.

In October 2022, Shamna tied the knot with Shanid in a wedding function held in Dubai. A year later, the actress gave birth to a baby boy, Hamdan.

The actress did her schooling at Ursuline Senior Secondary School in Kannur. In order to focus more on dance, Shamna moved to St. Teresas, Kannur. After completing her school education, the actress also earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English through a correspondence course.

Shamna Kasim Controversies

In 2020 June, four people approached Shamna under the pretext of a marriage proposal. According to them the groom was a TikTok star from Kasargod and showed her his photo. With the turn of events, those people demanded Rs.1 lakh from the actress and also threatened to spoil her career by circulating her videos on the internet. Following the incident, Shamna’s mother filed a complaint with the police station. Later, the cops arrested the four fraudsters who hailed from Thrissur.

A trained classical dancer, Shamna made her first stage performance at the early age of four. Later, she made her television debut as a contestant in ‘Super Dancer’, the dance reality shows telecast on Amrita TV. 

In 2004, Shamna made her acting debut with the Malayalam movie ‘Manju Poloru Penkutty’. A film directed by ace director Kamal, she played the role of Dhanya in the movie. Later, she went on to act in several films such as Hridayathil Sookshikkan, Junior Senior, Pachakuthira, and Bhargavacharitham Moonam Khandam.

In 2006, Shamna entered the Telugu film industry with ‘ Sri Mahalakshmi’. Directed by Fightmaster Vijayan, she played the title character in the film. However, the turning point in Shamna’s career was acting in the Malayalam film ‘Ali Bhai’. She received wide acclaim for her performance and it was followed by films such as Flash and College Kumaran.

Shamna made her debut in Tamil with ‘Muniyandi Vilangial Moonramandu’, a 2008 film directed by Thirumurugan. Subsequently, she became part of Tamil films such as Kodaikanal and Kandhakottai. In 2009, Shamna also acted in her first Kannada film ‘Josh’.

Later, in her career, Shamna delivered remarkable performances in movies such as Chattakaari, Thalaivi, Avunu, Savarakathi, Madhura Raja, and Dasara. Apart from films, she also became part of several television shows and web series such as Sabarimala Swami Ayyapyan, Kannamoochi, Navarasa, and 3 Roses. The actress also appeared as a judge in the television shows Kerala Dance League, D5 Junior, and Comedy Stars Dhamaka.

  • Shamna once revealed that she went through a bad phase in her career. The actress did not get any meaty characters and thus she decided to quit the industry and focus on dance. However, after the Telugu film ‘Avunu’ became a blockbuster, she changed her decision and staged a comeback to the film industry.
