Acing on the population count, the city of Dhanbad in the state of Jharkhand, India, occupies the second position as the city with the highest population. This industrial city is acclaimed as the “coal capital of India” which also gives it the name “Black Diamond”.

One of India’s reputed higher educational institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) also has a branch in the city. Apart from the coal mines, the industrial prominence of the city is also supplemented by the power generation plants situated here.

The rail division of Dhanbad has the popularity of being the most profitable division of the Indian Railway after Mumbai.

Places To Visit In Dhanbad/ Things To Do

1. Bhatinda Falls

Being a top-listed industrial city, Dhanbad can be misunderstood as a polluted and hustling city everywhere and at every time. But the city also preserves gems of natural beauty that fill the soul and body of the visitors with a cooling sense of revitalization.

The Bhatinda Waterfalls are one among them. This mesmerizing waterfall flows through the magnificent formations of rocks adding royal pride to its overall charm. Bhatinda waterfalls have also got the name, “waterfall of Moonidih”.

The location is easily accessible at just a distance of 14kms from the railway station of Dhanbad. You can book a taxi and can reach there easily. You can easily get away from the hustle and bustle of the city by adding this waterfall to the Dhanbad itinerary.

The surroundings of the falls make a perfect picnic spot for families and friends. Soothing greenery and the rock boulders are just perfect to attract nature lovers to the destination.

2. Maithon Dam

This is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in the city of Dhanbad. The dam is constructed across the river of Borakar. A journey of 48kms from the Coal City will help you reach the location of the Maithon Dam.

The dam has a power station functioning underground which is rare all among the region of Southeast Asia. Entry and visits to the dam and its underground power station are restricted according to the safety guidelines of the authorities.

You need to take permission for entry into the dam and a guide will be accompanying the guests on their visit to the dam, power station, and its surroundings. The construction credits for this resourceful dam go to the “Damodar Valley Corporation”.

The dam also plays a crucial role in controlling and preventing the floods that would have had destructive effects on the city of Dhanbad and its population. 

3. Birsa Munda Park 

When you feel like sitting back and relaxing on your trip to Dhanbad, Birsa Munda Park becomes the undoubted destination. This is the only park you can find in this industrial city. It is a perfect location to click picnic photographs.

Children can also have a fun time in the park since the authorities have facilitated an exclusive children’s park and a toy train inside the park. Walkways and canteen offering foods and beverages also ease the refreshing experience inside the park.

You can also take a tour across the different varieties of plant species grown on the 21 acres of land. The park is a recent construction in the city with just 13 years of age as of November 2022.

The implementation of the project of Birsa Munda Park has shown visible results in reducing the unemployment rate of the locals in the town. 

4. Topchanchi Lake 

This is yet another tourist attraction in the city of Dhanbad. The location of the lake near the National Highway increases the accessibility and hence a crowd of tourists can always be seen in the places surrounding the lake.

The positioning of the Topchanchi lake is called the Golden Quadrilateral. This is an artificial lake but the natural lush green surroundings and the wilderness that embrace the lake make it hard to distinguish as one.

Groups of friends and family can make the lake an ideal vacation spot on their trip to Dhanbad. The lake and the greens are spread across an area of 214 acres making it sufficient even for the peak-season crowds.

Apart from its tourist purposes, the lake is a major water reservoir satisfying the domestic and commercial objectives of the people nearby. 

5. Shakti Mandir

The pilgrims who tour the city of Dhanbad find the Shakti Mandir at the top of their itinerary. The Hindu Goddess Durga (a ferocious deity) is worshipped in the temple. Throughout the year, the temple is visited by pilgrims mostly domestic.

The temple is located in the center of Dhanbad city so it catches the attraction of tourists, even those who come to the city, not with an intention of taking a pilgrimage. The temple is popular for the “Akhand Jyoti” or “Eternal Flame”.

Believed to have been brought to the place by the Goddess Vaishno Devi. Diwali and Dussehra are the festive seasons of the temple. Every Tuesday and Friday, the temple conducts special worship for the deity. 

6. Panchet Dam 

Like the Maithon Dam, the Panchet Dam is also constructed by “Damodar Valley Corporation”. This is a multi-purpose dam inaugurated in the year of 1959. The dam is situated near a hill known as Panchet which later gets transferred as the name of the dam.

Tourists prefer Panchet Dam for their day trips in Dhanbad city. The easy accessibility of the dam also makes it the favorite hangout spot for tourists. The dam is built across the river of Damodar. 

7. Lilori Sthan Mandir

This is also a Hindu pilgrim spot dedicated to the goddess Kali. The temple is in proximity to the river, Katri. The locals are ardent devotees of the deity in the temple since it is believed that the Goddess kali is the protector of the native people there.

The religious customs and rituals performed in the temple are quite interesting for the tourists visiting the temple. The occasions of Kali Puja are celebrated with flooding crowds.
