Rupali Ganguly is an Indian actress who majorly works in Hindi television serials and movies. She made her debut as a child artist in the film ‘Saaheb’. However, Rupali became a household name after portraying the character of Dr. Simran Chopra in the series ‘ Sanjivani’.

Later, the actress gained more popularity after acting in the sitcom ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’. A trained classical dancer, Rupali has also been a contestant in television reality shows such as Bigg Boss and Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi.

On social media platforms, Rupali has a massive fan following with a whopping 2.8 million followers on Instagram and 19,400 followers on Twitter.

Rupali Ganguly Family

Rupali Ganguly was born on 5th April 1977. Her father Anil Ganguly is a Hindi film director and screenwriter who has directed national award-winning movies such as Kora Kagaz and Tapasya.

The actress’s mother’s name is Rajni Ganguly. Rupali also has a brother Vijay Ganguly, who is a choreographer best known for his work in films such as Jagga Jasoos, Andhadhun, and Stree.

Rupali Ganguly Relationships

Rupali Ganguly met Ashwin K Verma, an ad filmmaker and businessman while working together for an ad film shoot. Gradually they became friends and their friendship went strong for 12 years. It was only 5 years before their marriage that Rupali realized that she was madly in love with Ashwin.

However, the interesting part is that both of them never said ‘I love you’ to each other. Finally, the couple tied the knot on 6th February 2013. In 2015, Rupali gave birth to their son Rudransh.

As per sources, Rupali Ganguly has studied hotel management and theatre.  

Controversies

In 2018, Rupali went through a harrowing incident and the actress later shared her experience with Mumbai Mirror. According to Rupali, she was traveling in a car along with her son and 20-year-old caretaker.

During the journey, her car just hit a two-wheeler, and all of a sudden, two people who were traveling on the bike smashed one of the windows of her car. Subsequently, they banged the bonnet and also hurled abuses at the actress.

According to Rupali, she folded her hands and apologized to the miscreants as she didn’t want to get into a brawl with them. Later, in her tweet, Rupali thanked the Mumbai police and the women who came to her rescue at the spot.

Rupali once revealed the experience of how she was body shamed by people for her fat body. After her son’s birth, Rupali had put on weight drastically. According to the actress she had gained 83 kilos and her waist size had gone up from 24 to 40.

During those times, when Rupali used to go out, people started making fun of her telling that it was Monisha Sarabhai (the name of her serial character) and she has become so fat now. Rupali says that such experiences really hurt a woman who is already battling with postpartum and many other things.

At the early age of 7, Rupali made her acting debut with ‘Saaheb’, a Hindi movie directed by her father Anil Ganguly. Later in her teenage days, the actress appeared in the films Angaara and Do Ankhen Barah Hath, but both of these movies failed to make an impact at the box office.

In the year 2000, Rupali co-founded an advertising agency along with her father. The agency is into the production of films and commercials.

Rupali got a break in her career in 2002 after portraying the role of Dr. Simran Chopra in the Star Plus serial Sanjivani. Two years later, she shot to fame after playing the character of Monisha Sarabhai in the sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai.

In 2006, Rupali joined as a contestant in the first season of the Hindi reality show Bigg Boss and was evicted in the tenth week.

Subsequently, she went on to act in several serials such as Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, and Parvarrish – Kuchh Khattee Kuchh Meethi. Later Rupali took a sabbatical from acting and in 2020, after a long gap of 7 years, she made a strong comeback with Anupama, a series aired on Star Plus.

Rupali is a recipient of several coveted awards such as the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the most versatile actress and the Lions Gold Award.

  • Rupali admits that she was never career-oriented. All that she wanted to do was to get married and have kids.
  • The actress once admitted in an interview that she was not sure about being selected for the serial Anupamaa. According to Rupali, she had worked with its producer Rajan Shahi in the past and back then she used to be very unprofessional and misbehaved on the sets.
  • To take care of their son Rudraksh, Rupali’s husband took early retirement and moved from America to India. Rupali says that she has probably failed as a mother and her husband plays the role of both father and mother to their son.
  • The actress once said in an interview that her son doesn’t watch her serial Anupamaa.  According to Rupali, he thinks that his mother spends more time on the sets than at home.
  • Rupali’s mother Rajni had been a contestant in the television show DID Super Moms in 2013. Back then, Rupali had accompanied her mother to the show. 
  • Rupali is an ardent animal lover. A girl who is a fan of hers once adopted an elephant by the name of Mayan and it is now in Kenya with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
