Paradises At Sonmarg; Places To Watch Out In 2022

Sonmarg is an awesome hill station located in the district of Ganderbal in Jammu & Kashmir, India. The place is situated 62 Km from the town of Ganderbal and about 80 Km from the capital city of Srinagar.

Sonmarg is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Famous for its high-altitude hills, resorts, beautiful scenic views, and lakes. In this article, we are listing 9 of the must-see destinations in Sonmarg. So let’s travel with us folks.

Must-See Destinations To Visit At Sonmarg 

Zoji La

The Zoji la Pass is famous for many reasons. It was the infamous site of the Indo-Pak war that occurred in 1947-48 and also for its notorious hairpin bend roads which are scary and adventurous at the same time.

About  Zoji La

The Zoji La Pass is situated at an elevation of almost 3,528 meters, and is the second-highest pass on NH 1, with the first being the Fotu La Pass. It links the Kashmir valley to its west with the northeastern part of the Drass & Suru valleys. Also, it links the Indus Valley situated in the far east.

The pass was captured by the Pakistani militias the army of Pakistan in 1848, with the motive of conquering the Ladakh valley. However, India captured it back from Pakistan on 1st November 1948 in a siege named Operation Bison.

Zero Point

As luscious and scenic as it gets, Zero Point is a cool winter spot, especially for tourists who crave snowy vacations. The point is located 15,300 Km above sea level and it’s not so far away from the border of India and China. The pure awesomeness of Zero Point is displayed in its all habitat like the steam created by the three rivers, the jaw-dropping valley view, the tiny forest vegetation consisting of snowy maple trees, and the snow-capped stunning mountains with a kiss from the clouds.

 But keep in mind that the journey to Zero point is somewhat the most adventurous road journey you’ll ever try. The place is almost covered with snow throughout the winter months, so the best time to visit there would be between February and June. On the road to Zero point, the oxygen level will decline, so be aware that you can feel a little queasy.

Thajiwas Glacier

Thajiwas Glacier is situated 9,186 meters above sea level and is near Sonmarg town. The glacier is blessed with magnificent beauty. You fail to notice the beauty of the glacier mainly because of the Thajiwas mountain surrounded by the green meadows which tower over the glacier. Tourists flush to this place for having fun and adventure like building a snowman, sledding, and having the taste and aura of the winter season.

Vishansar Lake

The lake which is located not so far away from Sonmarg is a high-altitude lake that boasts stunning scenery and calm surroundings. It is surrounded by Large hulky mountains on one side and luscious meadows on the other. The tourists are not just attracted by the beauty of the nature of the place but also the trout and mahseer fishing in the summer.

Baltal Valley

Baltal Valley is located 2,347 meters from Sonmarg in Jammu & Kashmir. The beauty of the Valley is unreal it offers crystal clear water fall from the snow-capped mountains, and the beautiful and calm Sindhi river which flows silently. People who love photography rush here every year to capture the breathtaking views of Zoji la pass, the mountains, and its surroundings.

Gadsar Lake

Gadisar lake is situated at 13,750 and approx 8 Km from Sonmarg. The crystal clear bluish-green waters of the lake reflect the surrounding mountains and clouds so perfectly on the surface, it’s a mind-melting view. The word “Gadsar” in the local language means the “ Lake of Fishes”. It’s so apt for the place since the lake is abundant in brown trout.

Gangabal Lake

The lake is located at the foothills of Mount Harmukh in the Ganderbal district. It is an extremely beautiful high-altitude lake that is home to numerous species of fish including the infamous brown trout. You can get breathtaking views of the lake from Zaj Pass.

How To Reach Sonmarg

By Rail

 The nearest railway station to Sonmarg is the Jammu Tawi which is located 375 Km away. Others that are closest to the place are Udhampur and Srinagar both of which are easy to visit for tourists. You could travel to Sonmarg via car or bus from here

By Road

Buses are available to Sonmarg from the Jammu Airport, Jammu Tawi railway stations, and almost all major cities in Jammu And Kashmir. You can also hire taxis. If you love to drive to Sonmarg you can take the KargilSkardu road from Srinagar.

By Air

The Srinagar airport, which is 81 km away, is the nearest airport to Sonmarg. From here you can take a taxi, car or bus.
